Clarkson crushed Princeton, 6-1, tonight in Potsdam. The first period was a bit chippy. Clarkson killed off 4 Princeton power plays and the Knights scored on their only one. Mid way through the first, Matt Pagnutti fired a blast from the point that PU goalie James Konte kick saved by Craig Conroy shot the rebound past Konte for a 1-0 Clarkson lead. Late in the first, Patrice Robitaille emerged from a scrum in front and wristed one past Konte for a 2-0 lead. Princeton made it 2-1 early in the 2nd on a powr play goal by Miro Pasic but the game turned on a pair of flukey goals. Clarkson made it 3-1 on a Brian Mueller goal. Mueller fired one from the point, that wasn't very hard and might have been tipped, that was in the back of the net before Konte even flinched. The fourth goal was the backbreaker. Clarkson goalie Jason Currie made a save and the Princeton player got the puck behind the net. His pass back to the point eluded the defenseman and rolled into the Tiger zone. The defenseman toyed with it trying to elude forechecker Kevin Murphy and ended up dribbling it past Konte and into his own net for a 4-1 Clarkson lead. Murphy was originally credited with the goal but early in the third, it was changed to Currie. I believe he will be the first Clarkson goalie ever to score a goal; it was also the first game I've ever been to where a goalie was credited with a goal. Ed Henrich made it 5-1 when his rocket from the point beat Konte and another Knight scored the final goal for a 6-1 rout. All in all, Princeton did not play THAT poorly. They were much better than the score would indicate. They seemed to be totally deflated after the 3rd and 4th Clarkson goals. Clarkson was horribly undisciplined in the first period and early into the 2nd. They took several STUPID penalties. They took an inordinate amount of what can only be described as lame cheap shots. Mueller, deRuiter, and Lecavalier each took that type of penalty in the first. They were all stupid and unnecesary penalties. The Clarkson player had to get in the last shot, the last cross-check, the last shove... the best view from the penalty box. Fortunately, coach Mark Morris must have chewed them out int the first intermission because it subsided later. Referees Cerbo and Murphy did a decent job controlling a physical game and dealing with all the cheap shots Clarkson dished out early in the game. THREE STARS 1) Jason Currie, CU (1 goal scored, 30 saves. Is there anything he didn't do? :) 2) Matt Pagnutti, CU 3) Miro Pasic, PU The young defensemen Matt Pagnutti and Adam Wiesel have really improved this season and are definitely making serious contributions to the team. I remember when I first saw Pagnutti earlier in the year, I remember saying that he should never touch the puck at all. Now, he's certainly improved to from a liability to an asset. Wiesel has improved especially in the area of his skating and lateral movement. Clarkson visists Cornell and Colgate next weekend. ------ADIRONDACK RED WINGS-----CALDER CUP CHAMPS:---1981---1986---1989---1992-- | Bri Farenell [log in to unmask] | | Clarkson Univ.
