The College Hockey Discussion List Poll for January 5, 1994: Teams were given 15 points for a first-place vote, 14 for a second-place vote, and so on down to 1 point for a fifteenth-place vote. Total first- place votes are in parentheses. The HOCKEY-L poll rings in the new year with a fairly shuffled look from the last poll two weeks ago. Not surprisingly, the Michigan Wolverines retain their #1 ranking, but preseason favorite Lake Superior has moved back into the #2 spot after winning the Mariucci. Tournament performances had a big effect on teams in the poll. Wisconsin's victory over Northern Michigan in the Badger Showdown final boosted the Badgers into third place and dropped the Wildcats a couple spots in the rankings. BU's loss to New Hampshire in the Sheraton/US Air Classic cham- pionship game cost the Terriers their hold on second place, although New Hampshire wasn't affected. Northeastern jumped four places after winning the Syracuse Invitational. But perhaps the biggest tourney winner, in terms of the poll anyway, was RPI. The up-and-down Engineers are up again (and ranked #10) after scoring 23 goals in their own tournament. Composite poll (17 responses): Last Poll Record Pts. (12/22/93) Range 1. An oddity of note: although there was one fewer Western voter, Harvard wound up getting more points from the West than from the East. Eastern responses: Western responses: 1. Michigan (9) 135 1. Nevertheless, it is interesting to note a few discrepancies, especially in regards to Maine. TCHCR and RPICH are usually quite close, but RPICH has Maine ranked a dozen places ahead of TCHCR. (Both ratings treated Maine's pending three forfeits the same way) Harvard is not particularly highly thought of by either TCHCR or RPICH, but the Crimson are still hanging out at #3 in CHODR.
