The University of Michigan defeated Notre Dame tonight 3 to 1 at the Palace of Auburn Hills in front of the largest crowd ever to see a single NCAA hockey game (as claimed by public address announcer Glen Williams). Attendance was reported to be 20,427. WJR radio in Detroit reported that several hundred people who had tickets were turned away because the event was oversold. David Oliver scored late in the third period to give Michigan a 1-0 lead. Notre Dame pulled goalie Greg Louder with a little over a minute left and Michigan's Mike Knuble scored an empty netter. With 0:28 left in the game and Louder again on the bench, Notre Dame scored (I believe it was Brent Lamppa) to ruin Steve Shields' shutout bid. Michigan scored again with Louder pulled on a shot by Kevin Hilton into the empty net. The games 3 stars as chosen by WTKA in Ann Arbor: 1. David Oliver - UM 2. Greg Louder - Notre Dame 3.
