BU escaped from Conte Forum with a 5-2 win over Commonwealth Avenue rival BC tonight, 5-2. BU is now 10-3-0, 5-2-0 in Hockey East; BC is 6-5-1, 2-4-1 HE. After the Terriers outshot BC 18-4 in the first but only managed one goal, a shorthanded tally by Mike Prendergast, the Eagles clawed back with 2 goals within 2:13 late in the second to take a 2-1 lead after two. John Joyce got the Eagles on the board at 16:59 with a shot that apparently went off the far post and in past a sprawling John McKersie, although the NESN replay never showed the puck actually crossing the goal line. Then with 48 seconds left in the period, Jeff Connolly converted a pass from Buckley as Connolly was left uncovered to McKersie's right. Greg Taylor was having an immense game in the BC net, as his team was outshot 26-16 through two periods but led, 2-1. BC appeared to have built a two-goal lead 1:46 into the third on a goal by Clifton McHale, but the goal was waved off. After Rob Canavan put a shot on McKersie, the puck dribbled out until it was just outside the crease and then McHale crashed the net and swept the puck in while he was in the crease. It was a marginal call that BC protested, but the replay seemed to show it was the right call. This was the second goal BC had called back in the game; early in the first, Don Chase's goal was nullified when it was ruled that he knocked it in with his glove. From then on, it was all BU. Mike Pomichter tied it 2-2 at 7:45 when he carried up the left side, the BC defense collapsed, and Pomichter was able to slip it through Taylor's pads from close range. The Terriers went ahead for good at 11:11 when Jacques Joubert converted the rebound of Kaj Linna's shot on the power play. Doug Friedman added an insurance goal at 15:00 after robbing Chase of the puck in the BC end and rifling it over Taylor's shoulder, and Pomichter closed the scoring with an empty-netter at 19:14. It was a typical hard-fought BU-BC game, with bundles of penalties and hard-hitting action. BU's offensive firepower was the difference, as the BC defense was unable to contain the BU forwards in the BC zone in the third when they had to. But the Eagles did throw a scare into the Terriers, and it looked for a while as if Taylor might be able to backstop his team to the upset win. Both teams are off now until after the holidays. BU will play at the USAir Tourney in Vermont (UVM, Dart, UNH) on Dec 29-30, while BC will head out west for the Denver Cup (Denver, USAFA, Princeton) on Dec 28-29. Haven't heard a score yet on the other game involving HE teams, NU at UNH. --- --- Mike Machnik [log in to unmask] Cabletron Systems, Inc. *HMM* 11/13/93 <<<<<< Color Voice of the (7-7-1) Merrimack Warriors WCCM 800 AM >>>>>>
