I think if Kariya wants to leave for the NHL, that's his decision and does not
reflect badly on Maine.  I do think that although college may be a stepping
stone for a lot of athletes, while they are in school they should take their
education seriously, which it sounds like Kariya does.  Remember even though
some players may view college as a training ground, they are there primarily to
get an education (otherwise why bother to have academic requirements??).  And I
do agree with the person who wrote that these student-athletes are NOT like
everyone else in that they are getting full paid scholarships, and some of
them do not take their education seriously.  (I think that most adults who pay
for their school do take it very seriously and sometimes the student-athletes
may just need an extra push in the right direction, either by professors or
coaches.)
 
Also, in regards to dressing three goalies, here at Miami, I have a difficult
time remembering when we DIDN'T dress three.  Currently, we have Shulmistre,
Deschambeau, and King (sorry about the first two spellings, no hockey info here
at school).
