I was going to send the scores, but Lynn beat me to it...thanks, Lynn! COMMENTS * Northeastern runs its nonleague record to 6-0-0 after capturing the Syracuse Invitational. Look out for the Dogs in the second half. Also for Colgate, the upstart of the ECAC...5-1-0 ECAC, but only 2-5-0 nonleague. * Not to take anything away from UNH, which came back from being down 2-0 to BU after one, but BU was without five players, four key ones: O'Sullivan, Pandolfo, Lachance, Herlofsky, and Coleman. Coleman was the only one I didn't have as "key", though he has taken a regular turn on D all season. Apparently Herlofsky did not return from his shoulder injury; he was listed as possible for this tourney and is THE key to BU's HE and national title hopes, IMO; there may not be a better goalie in HE. At any rate, UNH goes to 13-3-1, 9-1-0 nonleague, which is nothing to sneeze at. Tough season in HE. BTW, notice how the AP report kept referring to BU as "Boston"? (argh!) You'd think they would get it right one of these days...having been a journalism major briefly, I know how it gets drilled into your head to get these things right. One more thing: UNH G Mike Heinke is quietly setting the world on fire in Durham after transferring from Providence. His GAA is a little under 3.00, I believe, with a defense that isn't as good as BU's. * GLI final wasn't as close as the score. Michigan skated circles around MSU when it wanted to, and only Buzak kept it close on the board. I hate to say it, but if you swap the two teams' goalies, this one might have been 9 or 10-0 Wolverines. Oliver was an interesting choice as MVP - he scored two goals in the final, but one was a fluke that drifted through the air and might have been deflected before settling in the net behind Buzak. Wiseman might have been a better choice, with 0-3--3 vs Notre Dame and at least 1-2--3 vs MSU. He set up the first goal by doing a nifty job of drawing 3 of the 4 MSU penalty killers to his side and then laying a perfect x-ice pass on Oliver's stick for the one-timer. Either way, Michigan posts its 6th straight GLI title win, after what - only 2 titles over 20+ years. 18-1-1 into the New Year is far beyond what anyone expected. * RPI's trouncing of Lowell surprised me; I even thought Lowell might win this one. The admittedly biased but still entertaining Lowell radio broadcast seemed to reflect a rather horrible job of officiating, as it sounded like the referees never really had control. I got to hear much of the game and I'd estimate way over 100 PIM had to have been handed out. RPI roared out to a 3-0 lead after one and 5-0 early in the second, as Lowell G Dwayne Roloson apparently got little help in front and RPI took advantage nicely. It was 7-2 after two and over for all intents and purposes; I thought I heard Roloson was pulled for whoever the Chiefs' backup is, thus the double digits (which RPI might have reached anyway). 23 goals in two nights is very nice for an RPI offense which needs to get in gear if the Engineers are going to make a run at 1st from their current 8th-place spot. Meanwhile, I expect Lowell will use this humiliation to get their feet back on the ground and come out with a strong game at BU Tuesday. --- --- Mike Machnik [log in to unmask] Cabletron Systems, Inc. *HMM* 11/13/93 <<<<<< Color Voice of the (7-7-1) Merrimack Warriors WCCM 800 AM >>>>>>
