The Gophers won in exciting fashion at Sullivan Arena in Anchorage tonight (last
night? This morning? Depends on your time zone!), bringing their record to
.500 at 6-6-3, 5-5-3 in the WCHA for 6th place (with a game still in hand over
most of the league.) Brian Bonin scored his second goal of the game with 1:08
left to break a 3-3 tie. Other Gopher goals were scored by senior Jeff Nielsen
and freshman Dan Hendrickson. Both teams had 34 shots on goal.

Glen Sonmor's (KSTP radio broadcast) Offensive player of the game: sophomore
center Brian Bonin.

Defensive player(s) of the game: He split this among sophomore Andy Brink,
senior Eric Means, and freshman Brian LaFleur, the three "little" (5'9", 5'9",
and 5'11") defensemen who saw a great deal more ice time than usual, because of
Charlie Wasley and Chris McAlpine being unavailable (due to a DQ and a death in
the family, respectively) for the first game. (Sophomores Dan Trebil and Greg
Zwakman apparently either play too much on a regular basis or are too tall --
6'3" and 6'2"-- to have been included in the honor! :-) )

I included the classes of these players here to point out that the Gophers are
having to rely on their young players. With would-be senior Craig Johnson and
would-be junior Darby Hendrickson gone to the Olympic team, this is a perhaps
part of the reason they went 0-5-1 in their first 6 WCHA games, but are 5-0-2
since then.
