I ran across this in the Star-Tribune this morning in Eric T. Pate's "Small
colleges" column:

The St. John's hockey team (5-4, 4-0 MIAC) has swept Gustavus Adolphus and St.
Olaf on consecutive weekends. The Johnnies, coached by John Harrington, a 1980
and '84 Olympian, start three defensemen and two forwards.
<end quote>

I had never heard of a team playing 3 D and 2 forwards before. Has anyone else?
What's the strategy involved?

It seems to be working for them. Of course, the 4-0 record may just be due to
religious fervor, with a Catholic school facing those heretical Lutherans. ;-)

(BTW, Harrington left his job as assistant at St. Cloud to take the head
coaching job at nearby St. John's this year.)
