The Dutchmen took a 4-1 lead into the 3rd period, but again failed to hold on for the win. Lowell got on the board first on a goal by Neil Donovan at 11:57. It took Union less than a minute to tie on Chad Thompson's 3rd goal of the season, set up by a nice pass into the zone by Cory Holbrough. At 16:37, Union's Troy Stevens found himself in front of Lowell goalie Craig Lindsay, and held it long enough to get a good high shot past him. Union played a good second period as well, extending their lead to 4-1. They called on Junior goalie Mike Gallant more often in this period, but he was able to stop all 14 shots he faced. Chris Ford scored Union's only power play goal in 11 chances at 1:49, and Russ Montieth scored an old-fashioned Union goal by hacking one into the corner of the net from the side of the crease at 19:33. The third period was all Lowell. The Chiefs got to within one on two power play goals by Ian Hebert. Just 20 seconds later, Greg Bullock tied the score for Lowell. The teams spent most of the period on special teams - and that was the difference in the game. Coming in, Lowell had scored on 37% of its power plays and killed off 38 of 40 shorthanded situations, and that success continued. Dwayne Roloson came in to start the 3rd in goal for Lowell, but that didn't matter much, as Union had only 2 shots on goal in the period. He spent most of his time behind the net touching up pucks iced by Union, although he was very good at taking cheap shots at the Union players whenever they were in the zone. Lowell had the better chances during overtime, but could not score the winning goal. Mike Gallant stopped 4 shots in OT for the Dutchmen to preserve the tie. Gallant had 38 saves in the game. Union is now 2-2-1 overall and remains at 0-2 in the ECAC. Lowell is now 5-1-2. Union remains home next weekend to play two ECAC games against Harvard and Brown. Things are definitely different this year - a tie against a good team, no matter how it happened, would have been great last year. But Coach Delventhal and the players were clearly disappointed to have blown the lead and let this one slip away. -- Jim Teresco, Department of Computer Science, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute [log in to unmask] (alternates: [log in to unmask], [log in to unmask]) Home: (518)347-0967, School: (518)276-4849, Sage 1112 Union College C.S.
