Several days ago in a post by Charlie Shub, Charlie mentioned that Refs have been 'selling' calls a lot more recently. This statement brought back some amusing memories for me. Back in March 1985, during the championship drive, RPI was hosting Lake Superior State in the NCAA playoffs (it was total goals for 2 games), and our buddy, Pierre Belanger was reffing that game. When it was announced that he would be the Ref, naturally the RPI fans were less than thrilled, having experienced the Pierre experience many times. RPI gained control of the puck and started to move up ice, when a Laker player checked the Engineer and the Engineer went flying. The player obviously dove, but the fans wanted a penalty! Pierre, while skating to follow the play, made a signal to the student side of the arena that it was a dive, sort of an exagerrated (sp?) skating diving motion. This brought boos from the less informed fans who thought this should be an 'obvious' penalty. We just thought that it was funny that old Pierre would acknowledge the commotion and put on a little 'ice capades' for us! I'm not really sure this fits in hockey-l, but perhaps the antic of hockey-l's most talked about ref (at least in the ECAC) would be found amusing!
