Tuesday night, Maine took to the ice before approximately 2,000 fans for the annual Blue/White scrimmage. It was the first formal performance for the ice hockey Black Bears since the October 2nd Midnight Madness (before approximately 3500 fans). They have learned a lot in the interim, as much more defensively aware squads took to the ice. UM Blue 2 3 3 - 8 UM White 1 1 1 - 3 The scoring (in this tightly-called game) was as follows: Period 1 1. 1:52 Blue - Clukey from Frenette and Pineau. 2. 5:33 Blue - PPG Purdie from Weinrich. 3. 15:28 White - Ingraham from Kariya. Shots on Goal: Blue 14, White 5 posted on scoreboard; Shots on Goal: Blue 10, White 6 on score sheet. Power plays: 1 from many :-) Referee: Tuell. - - - - - - - - - - - Coach Shawn Walsh has some difficult decisions to make in the next few days as he intends to cut 2-4 players from the current roster of about 34. (Junior G Greg Hirsch and some others have already been cut from the initial roster of 41). The decisions will be difficult because one could say good things about the performance of every player. Some of the folks that impressed me, but do not appear in the scoring include Justin Tomberlin, Jeff Libby, Trevor Roenick and Chuck Texeira. Walsh likes Blair Marsh in goal and I liked Peter Nordell, especially in the away Blue (he played one period for each team). :-) Tony Frenette doesn't become eligible to play until mid-season. My pick for Freshman-of-the-Year: Tim Lovell. Runner-up: Reg Cardinal. - - - - - - - - - - - The rosters as published at the game (typos probably mine): (Note: Class standing is in terms of ice hockey eligibility) White Roster Name Pos Hgt Wgt Cl Hometown/Last team Andy Silverman D 6-3 210 Jr Beverly, MA/Cushing Academy Jacque Rodrigue D 6-0 192 Jr Nashua, NH/North Iowa (USHL) Jason Mansoff D 6-0 200 Fr Spruce Grove, Alberta/ Merritt (BCJHL) Paul Kariya LW 5-11 180 So N.Vancouver, BC/Penticton (BCJHL) Wayne Conlan RW 5-11 180 So West Haven, CT/Trinity Pawling School Paul Zinchenko C 6-2 195 Fr Ft Wayne, IN/Saginaw (NAJHL) Dan Shermerhorn LW 5-10 185 Fr Calgary, Alberta/Vernon (BCJHL) Justin Tomberlin C 6-1 195 Sr Coleraine, MN/Greenway High Brad Mahoney RW 6-4 200 Fr Duxbury, MA/Tabor Academy Cal Ingraham RW 5-4 158 Sr Georgetown, MA/US Air Force Academy Leo Wlasow D 5-11 190 Fr Kungsbacka, Sweden/Penticton (BCJHL) Blair Allison G 5-11 185 Fr Golden, BC/Estevan (SJHL) Peter Nordell G 6-1 180 Jr Danville, CA/Minnesota-Crookston Jason Dekker D 6-2 185 Fr Edina, MN/Waterloo (USHL) Mike Santonelli LW 6-0 195 Fr Arlington, MA/Matignon High Reg Cardinal C 5-10 170 Fr Glenevis, Alberta/Ft McMurray (AJHL) Craig Gwinn C 6-3 190 Fr Durham, NH/Westminster Prep Blue Roster Name Pos Hgt Wgt Cl Hometown/Last team Jeff Tory D 5-11 180 So Coquitlam, BC/Penticton (BCJHL) Jason Weinrich D 6-3 210 Sr Gardner, ME/Springfield Olympics (NEJHL) Mike Latendresse C 5-10 160 Jr Montreal/MontrealOlympics(Quebec TierII) Barry Clukey C 5-10 185 Fr Waterville, ME/Waterville High Dave MacIsaac D 6-1 190 Jr Arlington, MA/Halifax (Maritime JuniorA) Patrice Tardif RW 6-2 200 Sr St Methode, Quebec/Lennoxville (CJEP AA) Brad Purdie C 5-11 180 Fr Dollard-des-Ormeaux,Quebec/Weyburn(SJHL) Tony Frenette RW 5-10 180 Fr Quebec City, Quebec/Ft McMurray (AJHL) Jeff Libby D 6-3 200 Fr Waterville, ME/New Hampshire Prep Lee Saunders D 6-0 190 Sr Fernie, BC/Nanaimo (BCJHL) Chuck Texeira LW 6-0 200 Sr Easton, MA/Catholic Memorial High Tim Lovell C 5-9 165 Fr Norwood, MA/Boston Jr Bruins (NEJHL) Peter Nordell G 6-1 180 Jr Danville, CA/Minnesota-Crookston Blair Marsh G 6-2 180 So Parksville, BC/Victoria (BCJHL) Marcel Pineau LW 5-10 180 Fr Charlottesville, PEI/Kimball Union Acad.
