from Mike M... >John Haeussler asked me in mail: >>What is the first name of Herlofsky, BU's goaltender? There is a >>Derek Herlofsky (goaltender) in camp with the Dallas Stars. In case anyone was wondering, I noticed this in the most recent issue of THE HOCKEY NEWS. Mike confirmed that Derek is BU's man, so this appears to be either an error by THN or a major loss for BU. >On another note...on the way in, I was listening to Dale Arnold's show >on WEEI. He is conducting an on-air survey today of people's favorite >sports and other matters in a response to the national survey that >came out last week (in which arena football was ranked 31st and NHL >hockey 32nd, for example). Of course, Dale's survey isn't anywhere >close to being scientific because of the way he's doing it, but it was >interesting to hear that the first caller's favorite sport was college >hockey and his favorite sporting event was the hockey Final Four. :-) I have to comment on this national survey Mike refers to. I'm not very familiar with Sports Marketing Group in Dallas, who apparently conducted the survey, or their study design, but I do question their results. I feel that this type of data collection is very time dependent and, given that there results are now being released, it's *possible* that much of the data was collected in the second half of 1992. This would in-part explain the overwhelming popularity of Ladies Figure Skating, Ladies Gymnastics, Pairs Figure Skating, Men's Figure Skating, Pairs Ice Dancing and Men's Gymnastics...all in the Top 10 most popular sports. These sports will register more popular in an olmpic year, especially following the conclusion of the olympics. Also, NFL Football, NC$$-CFA Football and High School Football all made the top eleven... which would not refute the hypothesis of Fall 1992 data collection. Finally, Olympic Basketball ranked higher than NC$$ Men's College Basketball. Give me a break. Try asking someone in March. Does anyone believe this to be true at any time other than in the wake of the Dream Team? Enough rambling. For what it's worth, NC$$ College Ice Hockey was the 27th least popular sport. Polo was 26th and Mountain Bike Racing was 28th. .................................................................
