(everything unofficial as I didn't get the official box) West 4 0 1 - 5 East 3 1 2 - 6 Shots on goal: West 41, East 33 Penalties: None! MVP West: Plante East: Rogles Referees: Cole (HE), Gallagher (ECAC), Taylor (HE) (each was lineman for one period) Local radio: Joe Carr with Kent Salfi Local TV: Dale Duff with Bob Norton Attendance: about 5700 (sellout) Face-mask of choice: the half-shield This was a terrific event. After the steak and lobster banquet Friday evening, I wondered who could skate on Saturday, but the answer was most everyone! I gave the participants in a previous posting, so I won't repeat that here, except that Minnesota-Duluth's Joe Biondi replaced Smolynski. The first period featured fast skating, talented shooters, occasional defense and lots of excitement. In goal for the West was Tom Newman and for the East was Grant Wood. Both goalies had lots of action, but didn't look very sharp. Derek Plante opened the scoring at 0:29 as he fired from the face-off circle on a 2-1 or 3-1 break. At 3:14 Plante gets his 2nd from Biondi, as Wood can't keep the puck under his pads and Plante pokes it in. Just 14 seconds later Jim Montgomery picks the pocket of a West defender at the offensive blue line and skates in alone and scores with a crossing backhand. At 9:13, Mark Ouimet slowly takes the puck the length of the ice and fires a slap shot from the top of the face-off circle. West 3 - East 1. At 9:52, Steve Dubinsky knocks in a rebound from Ray Alcindor (Middlebury) and Greg Carvel. At 11:42, Montgomery steals the puck again at his offensive blue line and feeds David Sacco. West 3 - East 3. Finally, at 18:34, Biondi stuffed it home from a pass from behind the net (sorry I missed the assist(s)). Thus endeth a wild 1st period: West 4 - East 3. In goal for the West in the 2nd period was Shaun Graviston and for the East was Chris Rogles. This turned into a period of fast skating, some hitting and defense and great goal-tending. The only score was for the East's Alcindor at 2:47 from Carvel and Jack Duffy. Duffy, with some nifty skating and stick handling advanced the puck to nearly the goal line on the left boards. A perfect pass in front of the goal crease landed on Alcindor's stick and the puck goes in on the 2nd whack. About half way through this period, the shots were given as 20-20. The 2nd period ended tied 4-4. The third period goalie for the East was Garth Snow; the West started with Graviston and at the midpoint in the period switched back to Newman. The GWG was scored at 6:30 of the 3rd period by Ryan Hughes from Snow and (someone). Hughes half-slap shot from the top of the circle was tipped by West defenseman Michael Smith to fool Graviston. At 6:51, Mark Kaufmann scored from 6 feet, with assists to Montgomery and Sacco. Snow and the East weathered a barrage of shots the rest of the way, and allowed the final goal at 19:49 ... the hat trick by Plante while Newman, who played well in his half of the 3rd period, was benched for a 6th skater. Final: West 5 - East 6. Not surprisingly, the best forwards of the game are frequently mentioned in the scoring recap: Plante and Biondi were outstanding for the West, while Montgomery and Alcindor excelled for the East. My picks on defense were Pat Neaton for the West and Aaron Miller for the East. cheers, Wayne Smith The College Hockey Discussion List administrator Systems Group - CAPS BITNET/CREN: wts@maine University of Maine System internet: [log in to unmask]
