First off, my apologies to Wayne if this isn't as close to college hockey as he would like, but I'm guessing it may interest those of us in the Boston area this weekend. According to another story in today's Globe, the New England Pro-Am hockey league will conduct its fifth annual High School All-American tournament at Boston University's Walter Brown Arena today through Sunday. The tournament is for players who will be eligible for this year's NHL draft June 26. Players are invited by recommendations from all 26 NHL teams and scouting staffs. Heading the list of invitees from the Boston area are Jonathan Coleman of Andover Academy and Shawn Bates of Medford HS. Coleman and Bates are considered among the best players in the country and are expected to be drafted in the early rounds. (Note: Both Bates and Coleman will be attending BU next year :-) Some of the top players from around the US who will be attending are Kris Merkler (Hicksville NY) of Canterbury School, Tom White (Chicago) of Westminster School, Cort Lundeen and Tim McDonald of Bloomington-Jefferson HS in Minnesota, Pat Brownlee of Blake School, and Jason Dekker of Edina, Minn. HS. If you find yourself in Boston this weekend, it might be a chance to check out some of the names we'll be talking about next season here on Hockey-L in all four leagues. --Sid Whitaker BU '94
