Friday afternoon, the #1 Penn State Icers played their final preliminary round game at the ACHA National Tournament, taking on Anfu Wang, last year's tourney MVP and the #4 Iowa State Cyclones, last year's champions. But the Cyclones looked nothing at all like last year, as Penn State scored just 16 seconds into the contest, and would add four more in the period, including a goal by Ross Cowan at 2:35 (his 43rd goal and 100th point this season), and one by Don La Lamison at 12:47 (Penn State's 300th goal this year) to take a 5-0 lead after one. Iowa State had pulled their starting goaltender, Pete Jurvis, after just 5:57 of play, with the Icers up 4-0. Iowa State would finally get on the board at 1:26 of the second, but Penn State would answer back at 8:16, and led 6-1 after two. Dennis Magulick came in to relieve John Gray midway through the period. The Cyclones tried to make a comeback, pressuring Magulick during the third, and scored at 5:33, but Mark Cervellero would pick up his hat trick at 18:50, and Penn State had defeated Iowa State 7-2 to advance to tonight's championship game. The loss knocked Iowa State out of the consolation game. Score by periods: 1 2 3 T #4 Iowa State 0 1 1 2 #1 PENN STATE 5 1 1 7 1st: PSU Murphy 35 (Adams) 0:16 PSU Cowan 43 (Keegan) 2:35 PSU M.
