I guess this season was just not to be for the Tigers, as they lose at home
to DU tonight 4-2. Had to watch the game on tv, as CC for some reason didn't
provide a bus out to the Broadmoor tonight and I couldn't find a ride (this
really surprised me, seeing how the "DU sucks" games are the biggest of the
season). CC got on the board first with a goal from Steve Nelson about four
minutes into the game. DU retaliated 2 1/2 minutes later to tie it at 1
going into the second period. During the second period, the only scoring was
by DU to take the lead at 2-1, but there was plenty of pushing and shoving
between players, as is usually the case with these series. A little ways
into the third, Badalich left the net to get the puck in one of the corners,
but ended up in the middle of a crunch and lost his stick as a result and
had to play with one from a defenseman until his must've been returned to him
(didn't see it as it was off-camera). DU's Maurice Hall scored their third
goal, outskating Marcus Taeck and putting it between Badalich's skates. Later,
CC finally got another goal on a power play when Jody Jaraczewski tipped in a
shot by Shawn Reid (I'm not sure, but I think this was Reid's first game back
since his injury in Duluth). It still looked like it could be anybody's game
as CC was only down by one. Then, with only 7 minutes to play, Maurice Hall
scored another goal for the Pioneers to regain their two goal lead at 4-2.
The Tigers were frustrated by this, and even more so as a crack in one of the
plexiglass panels caused a fairly long stoppage of play while it was being
replaced. CC had plenty of shots on goal, but Schoen made some impressive
saves to keep CC from scoring again, even during a 6 on 4 advantage during
a power play when Badalich was pulled for the last minute of the game. It's
unfortunate for Buetow that his last home game at the Broadmoor didn't end
in a win, as the Tigers travel to the DU Arena tomorrow night and then to
either Minnesota or Wisconsin next week for the first round of playoffs.

One issue that has been raised here at CC, which I'm sure was caused by the
controversy with Buetow, is whether or not to continue having Division I sports
here. Currently, CC has only two Div. I teams, men's ice hockey and women's
soccer. Some faculty members have stated that CC doesn't need any Div. I teams
and that Buetow violating NCAA rules only proves that Div. I and the WCHA have
outgrown CC. In an interview during the second intermission of tonight's game,
though, CC AD Max Taylor said that the school will be continuing to support
both Div. I teams, especially the hockey program as they make the transition
to a new coach next season (an announcement on the process for that will be
made by acting CC president Michael Grace on Mon.). The only problem he sees
facing the Tigers is the issue of whether or not Colorado Springs will build
a new arena that they will be able to play in, as after next season they will
no longer be playing at the Broadmoor, which has been losing money lately.
This is all from memory, so when I see something more specific in the paper,
I
I'll correct myself.
