From Sid Hartman's column in Saturday's (2/27/93) Star Tribune: The University of Minnesota has raised $4.1 million of the $5.5 million it needs toward the $41 million cost of remodeling Williams Arena, old Mariucci Arena and to defray the cost of the new Mariucci Arena. The balance of the money has to be raised by January 1, 1994. A total of $1.5 million of new building funds have been raised this year. And from Sid's column this morning: There had been talk of (Norm) Green (owner of the MN North Stars) giving the University of Minnesota the Met Center scoreboard and other hockey equipment if the Stars move. This would be in lieu of the $1 million that Green committed to the 'U'. Green had already contributed $300,000 from last year's Badger-Gophers game at Met Center. However, the athletic department couldn't wait for Green to make a decision and had to sign a contract to buy a score- board for the new Mariucci Arena. Now he is asking the University if it can get out of the scoreboard contract. There is still a possibility that Green will contribute some equipment if he moves. Meanwhile, look for Target Center to play host to a Gophers game so the 'U' can recover some of that money. (end quoted material) Norm Greed will NEVER be welcome back in these towns (Mpls AND St Paul) again if he leaves and not only stiffs all the North Star supporters, but also reneges on his big contribution to the Gopher hockey program and new arena. At the very least, the University should get back the award that we gave Mr. Greed at center ice last November during the Border Battle at the Met Center. -Carol
