The Black Bears are one game away from tying the NC$$ record for unbeaten streak in a season. Maine sets new HE records for unbeaten streak and consecutive wins each game; currently the streaks are: unbeaten, 18 games (17-0-1) and winning, 16 games. Maine is also unbeaten in its last 50 games at home. If the box score is right, NU actually outshot Maine 54-45 in the second game of the series won by Maine 6-2, with Snow making 52 saves. NU goalie Mike Veisor stopped 71 of 84 shots (.845) in the series, a respectable performance for a goalie who hasn't gotten much help lately. Maine can tie the 1984-85 RPI record of 33 games without a loss in one season (32-0-1) with a tie or better at home against BU Friday night; the game will be shown on NESN. Maine also hosts BU the next night in a game that could set a new NC$$ record. BU and UMass-Lowell also swept their weekend series, BU over Merrimack on the strength of Jay Pandolfo's hat trick Friday and David Sacco's hat trick Saturday. UML took two from BC. Elsewhere, Providence and UNH split their series with each team winning at home. Friday night, the weather forced two games to begin later than the standard starting time of 7 pm Eastern: UML-BC started at 7:40, and PC-UNH began at 9:15. PC and UNH then had to do battle the next afternoon at 2 pm in Providence which probably contributed to the low-scoring game, won 2-1 by PC after UNH had taken Friday's late-starter by a 3-1 score. PLAYOFF PICTURE Maine and BU have clinched home ice for the best-of-2 quarterfinal round. Maine can clinch first with at least two points in next weekend's set with BU. Neither team can finish lower than 2nd. The picture involving the other six teams is a little cloudy. Here's how each team's chances look in order of their current standings. It looks like UNH, PC and UML will fight for 3rd-5th while BC, NU and Merrimack will duel for 6th-8th. We should know more after this coming weekend. 3 UMASS-LOWELL Games remaining: 5 Home: PC, UNH, MC Away: PC, UNH Outlook: Has easiest schedule of teams fighting for 3rd-5th. Needs 3 pts from PC to take season series, needs 3 pts from UNH to take season series. 3 PROVIDENCE Games remaining: 5 Home: UML, BC, BU Away: UML, BC Outlook: Slightly tougher schedule than UML because of game with BU. Split season series with UNH, needs 3 pts from UML to take series. 3 wins in final 5 games should gain Friars home ice. 5 NEW HAMPSHIRE Games remaining: 5 Home: BC, UML Away: BC, UML, Maine Outlook: Toughest schedule of 3rd-5th place teams because of game with Maine. Split series with PC, needs 3 pts from UML to take series. Probably needs help to gain home ice along with at least 3 wins in last 5 games. 6 BOSTON COLLEGE Games remaining: 6 Home: UNH, PC, NU Away: UNH, PC, Maine Outlook: Easiest schedule of 6th-8th place teams. Outside shot at 5th but probably needs to sweep UNH (trails series 0-1-1). Sweep of UNH & PC (series even 1-1-0) could get Eagles home ice. Leads NU in series 1-0-1, holds tiebreaker over Merrimack 2-1-0. 7 NORTHEASTERN Games remaining: 5 Home: MC, BU Away: MC, BU, BC Outlook: Tougher schedule than BC due to games with BU. Trails BC in season series 0-1-1, leads Merrimack in series 2-0-0. One point vs Merrimack all but clinches 7th, could finish 6th but probably not higher. 8 MERRIMACK Games remaining: 5 Home: NU, Maine, Maine Away: NU, UML Outlook: Toughest schedule of teams fighting for 6th-8th. Trails NU in series 0-2-0, loses tiebreaker with BC 1-2-0. Could finish 7th with sweep of NU and win over UML unless NU sweeps BU and beats BC. Needs lots of help to finish 6th but still possible. NEXT WEEKEND Maine hosts BU for two games, and the other three series are home-and-homes: NU-Merrimack, UML-PC, BC-UNH. All four series have playoff implications with the home-and-homes being of prime importance; any sweeps could do wonders for the winning team's chances. LAST WEEK'S PLAYERS OF THE WEEK (from HE release 2/8/93) HE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Jim Gibson, Jr LW, Merrimack: Gibson tallied one goal and two assists in a down-to-the-wire 5-4 loss to BC and added a goal in a 4-3 OT win over UNH. Honor Roll: Michael Spalla, BC; Derek Herlofsky, BU; Jim Montgomery, Maine; Erik Peterson, PC. HE ROOKIE OF THE WEEK Mike Latendresse, So C, Maine: Latendresse takes rookie honors for the second consecutive week, notching four goals and one assist for five points in two wins over UMass-Lowell. He earned his second collegiate hat trick in the 7-4 win, including the game-winner, and tipped in a SHG to open Maine's scoring in the 4-2 win. Honor Roll: Greg Callahan, BC; Brendan Concannon, UMass-Lowell; Bob Bell, PC. KARIYA WATCH Paul Kariya scored against Northeastern with 3:40 left to keep his scoring streak alive, now at 26 games since he came up with 2-2--4 in the second NU game to give him 3-2--5 on the weekend. He now has 21-51--72 in 26 games overall, 14-37--51 in 18 HE games. He broke Ken Hodge's record of 49 HE points by a freshman as well as Hodge's record of 36 HE assists by a freshman; both were set in 34 game league seasons.
