Yes, the Saints managed to pull out to an 8-3 third period lead in their bid to overtake Yale in the ECAC standings and then fritter it all away as Yale scored the last five goals - the last two coming in the last minute of play with the Yale net empty. Almost all of the Yale goals followed the same blueprint - the sort of "amoeba" hockey you see in Pee Wee games where the scrum just keeps moving towards the goal until the puck eventually goes in. Yale may have managed to score 8 times and never once have the puck hit the back of the net! This is not meant at all to denigrate the quality of Yale's comeback, but rather to highlight SLU's inability to either control the puck or keep the goalmouth clear of bodies. Yale also had a very productive night on the power play, 4 goals in 7 tries, including both parts of a full 2:00 5 on 3 at the start of the third. So, counting the last two, they had 6 man advantage goals with essentially the same group of players (Leroux, Kaufmann, Lavish, Maltby) involved in each. It's tough to remember that SLU played a pretty good game also - highlighted by Brian McCarthy's hat trick and freshman Burke Murphy's team-leading 17th goal. The Saints also managed to regroup and have much the better of play in the overtime period - particularly when Allain couldn't quite get a good shot off on a semi-breakaway and later when Carvel couldn't get the puck to sit down after getting a great feed in the slot. The ending soured the Saints final (regular season) home game and made the home ice road much more difficult (looks like they'll need to sweep Brown and Harvard on the road and still hope for at least one loss by either Yale or Clarkson). Of course a Tuesday night home game is still possible if they lose both on the road and Vermont sweeps Cornell and Colgate - but we don't want another game THAT badly! So this may have been the final Appleton appearance for 11 seniors: Lee Albert, Greg Carvel, John Massoud, Mark McGeough, Gerard Verbeek, Ted Beattie, Brady Giroux, Jim Giacin, back-up goalie Dave McTavish, and injured defensemen John Roderick and Mike Terwilleger (wouldn't it have been nice to have them available to unclog the middle in this game!).
