The Penn State Icers wrapped up the first perfect regular season in team
history as they defeated the Buffalo State Bengals 9-5 in Buffalo Saturday
night. Eight different players score for Penn State, who opened the scoring
about 5 minutes into the first on the power play. Buffalo State would score
about 4 minutes later, but the Icers would score twice more in the period
to make it 3-1, but the the Bengals' Rick Veiders scored his second of the
game to make it 3-2 after one. Buff State would score just 15 seconds into
the second on the power play to tie it up, but then the Icers score three
unanswered goals by Larry O'Brne, Mark Cervellero, and Rob Keegan, and it
looked like Penn State was on its way to another rout. The Bengals' would not
lay down and die, however, and scored with under four minutes left in the
second to make it 6-4. But Steve Karl would score just 10 seconds later,
and Penn State was up 7-4 after two. Still Buff State wouldn't give up, as
Brad Allecia scored for the Bengals early in the third, but that's as close
as the Bengals would get, as Mark Cervellero and Brad Russell closed out the
scoring for the Icers, as they went on to win 9-5. John Gray picked up the
win for the Icers, who are now 28-0-0. Buffalo State, who was undefeated
at home and #1 in ACHA Division II, falls to 19-5-0 (I think).

The Icers return home to the Penn State Ice Pavilion this weekend for the
Atlantic Collegiate Hockey League Tournament. On Friday, #2 Rhode Island
will face #3 Delaware at 5 PM, followed by #1 Penn State against #4 Maryland
at 8:30. The Championship game is on Saturday at 3:30 PM. Earlier this
season, the Icers clobbered the Maryland Terrapins 15-1 and 12-4.
