Summary: BC came out physical, trying to intimidate the Terriers, but it was BU that took the lion's share of trips to the penalty box. In any event, a virtually non-existent defense and the same careless passing and stickhandling from Friday's game ultimately grounded the Eagles. In a hard fought, rough-and-tumble first period it was the Terriers that drew blood first, when Mike Bavis netted his 8th of the year, after poking in rebound that worked free from sprawling Mike Sparrow's pads as BU held a man advantage. Just over two minutes later, after BU penalties resulted in a game misconduct for leading scorer Dave Sacco and a 5-3 advantage for the Eagles, Jack Callahan scored his second in two nights to knot it at one. After the "Romper Room" style of the first period, BC's defense decided to take a period (or two) off. BU struck again at just 1:16 when Kaj Linna's shot popped out of Sparrow's glove and Doug Friedman flipped it into the net for BU's second power-play goal of the night. Then, just under four minutes later, Jon Pratt raced up the right side and beat Sparrow with a low shot that caught the inside of the far post to give the Terriers a 3-1 lead at 5:07. Bc was hampered by their defense's inability to clear the puck, especially after Sparrow left rebounds loose out in front. Freshman defenseman Doug Wood got his first after taking a nice feed from Jay Pandolfo and one-timing it from the top of the point when Sparrow lost it in traffic. BU was far from out of the woods when Princeton transfer Rob LaFerriere chalked up his first on a BC power-play at 17:50 to make it 4-2. BC opened the third with power play, and although they didn't score, it helped the Eagles get some of the best scoring opportunities they'd have all weekend. John Joyce took a nice feed from Ian Moran to beat Cashman, and have a wide-open net, but the puck hobbled over his stick and amazingly, he never even got a shot off on what was a guaranteed goal. Cashman came up big on a point-blank shot from Spalla with a nice pad save, one of his 32 on the evening. In an apparent gesture of "divine intervention" after the BC power play, someone tossed a Bible out on the ice, maybe hoping to give the hapless Eagles a prayer :) It was not to be, however, as Mike Bavis railed a shot passed the screened Sparrow on a BU power play at 9:14. At 12:22 of the third BC's Clifton McHale took a 5-minute major for roughing up Cashman behind the net, and although BC did a good job of clearing the zone, Mike Pomichter broke in on Sparrow and scored on a nice backhander that caught the upper right-hand corner at 14:50. Freshman Ken Rausch got his fourth of the season at 19:04 of the closing stanza when his wrist shot beat Sparrow's glove and caught the right corner, effectively nailing shut BC's coffin. This was a tough loss for BC, and their third of the season to their MBTA Green Line foes. Being without the services of Josh Singewald, the goalie who suffered a strained right knee Friday, hurt the Eagles' confidence. As BC tackles Maine next weekend at Conte Forum, they'll need to try and control the puck better and Sparrow will have to control his rebounds, instead of leaving them out front. BC will meet the Terriers again in the opening round of the Beanpot on February 1, but BU shouldn't underestimate the Eagles' potential if BC can regain their confidence. BU improves their unbeaten streak to 11-0-1 as they face UNH next weekend in a home-and-home series, playing in Durham on Friday evening. BC closes out their weekend after a Friday night game with a Sunday afternoon matchup (2:00 p.m.) against the Black Bears. --Sid BU '94
