Summary:

Union jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, but Yale came back with 4
unanswered goals to beat Union, 4-2, in an ECAC league game played at
Achilles Rink.

It took Union just one minute to score on Jeff Jiampetti's weak shot on
a partial break that slipped past Yale's Sullivan, who looked bad on the
play. Both teams had plenty of chances in the first. Mike Gallant
played very well, and got a little help from the post as Union killed
off a Yale power play midway through the period. Union scored on the
power play on Reid Simonton's blast from the right point. Union looked
like they were just trying to kill off the period when Yale's Stephen
Maltby beat Gallant from in close with 30 seconds left in the period.

Union kept the lead until 14:40 of the 2nd, when Steve Lombardi put his
own rebound past Gallant. Yale took the lead on a perfect pass from
Jamie Lavish behind the net out to Mark Kaufmann, who was all alone in
front of the net. Union did have its chances in the period, but
couldn't get one past Sullivan. Union was helped in the game by 11
power plays, including 2 long 5-on-3's. Yale got their own power play
goal in the third to put the game away.

Overall, it was a very good effort by the Dutchmen. They really
outplayed Yale for a good part of the game. A few breakdowns late in
the first and second periods cost them. Mike Gallant was rewarded for
his performance against Merrimack by getting his second consecutive
start in goal. It looks like he's played himself back into a rotation
with Luigi Villa. Coach Delventhal was happy with his team's play,
considering that they were playing one of the season's leaders in the ECAC
standings.

The loss drops Union to 1-6 in the ECAC, 1-9 overall. Yale is 6-1-2 in
the ECAC, 7-4-2 overall.

Summary:

Union snapped a 6-game losing streak with a very impressive 3-1 win over
Princeton at Achilles Rink. The Dutchmen were led by the offense of the
freshmen, and the goaltending of Luigi Villa.

The Dutchmen managed only 5 shots on goal in the first period, but one
of those went in when freshman Brad Kukko took a pass from Cory
Holbrough behind the net and put it past Craig Fiander. Luigi Villa,
making his first start in goal for Union since allowing 9 goals against
RPI on December 11, stopped all 10 shots he faced in the period.

The second period was very evenly matched. Both teams had 12 shots on
goal. Princeton scored the only goal of the 2nd period at 16:26 to tie
the game at 1. By this point, the game was getting very rough, but
nothing was being called by referees Frank Cole and Drew Taylor. Union
finally got a chance on the power play at the end of the period with
Princeton's Pasic in the box. The period ended with Union still on the
power play.

Union was able to capitalize on that power play chance just 51 seconds
into the 3rd period. Freshman Chris Sears took a bounce off the boards
on a shot wide of the net by Dean Goulet. Sears found himself in front
of Fiander with the puck and fired it past him. It was Sears' first
goal since he missed six games with a broken hand. But the most
impressive goal was yet to come. Freshman Chris Hancock sent a pass
from the corner to Holbrough who was waiting behind the net to slap the
pass up to Kukko who put it in from close range. Coach Delventhal
commented that "we haven't seen a shot like that since Craig Ferrero."
For the rest of the game, Union just wanted to kill off the clock.
Princeton did get 14 shots in the period, but Villa stopped them all.

It was a very impressive win for Union. Princeton could not get
anything going for the most part. Just about everyone played well
for Union, but a few players stand out. Brad Kukko (2 goals, 1 assist)
and Chris Sears stood out on offense. Luigi Villa stopped 35 of 36
shots, including some from very close. This gives Union 2 goaltenders
playing very well.

Very few penalties were called during the game. It was really getting
ridiculous for a while, when just about everything was let go. Union's
Cory Holbrough was dragged down on a potential breakaway and nothing was
called. If the 2 referee, 1 linesman system was supposed to cut down on
uncalled penalties, it definitely didn't work in this one.

Union is now 2-6 and in 11th place in the ECAC, 2-9 overall. Princeton
is now 3-6-1 in the league, 5-8-1 overall. Union continues this
homestand next weekend against Harvard and Dartmouth. First-place
Harvard will be at Achilles on Friday night, and Dartmouth will be in
for an unusual Sunday night game. The Dartmouth game now has a lot of
potential playoff implications as Union is just 2 points behind
Dartmouth and 2 points ahead of Colgate in the ECAC.
