CCHA/MICHIGAN HOCKEY MAGAZINE OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Kelly Harper, a junior right wing from Michigan State University, has been selected CCHA Offensive Player of the Week for his performance the weekend of December 11-12, 1992. He played his junior hockey for the Wexford (Ontario) Raiders. Harper, a 6-2, 175-pound native of Scarborough, Ontario had five points (two goals, three assists) in the Spartans split with number two ranked Lake Superior in East Lansing. With MSU trailing 3-0 Friday, Harper scored a goal and assisted on the next two Spartan tallies to knot the game at three. In Saturdays 4-1 victory, Harper scored the first goal of the contest and assisted on the second goal (eventual game-winner). Harper is a 1991 draft selection of the Calgary Flames. CCHA/MICHIGAN HOCKEY MAGAZINE DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Aaron Ellis, a freshman goaltender from Bowling Green State University, has been selected CCHA Defensive Player of the Week for the week of December 11-12, 1992. Ellis played last season for Culver Military Academy in Indiana. Ellis, a 6-1, 175-pound native of New Palestine, Indiana, recorded both wins for the Falcons as they defeated UIC (9-2) and Notre Dame (5-2). He had 22 saves plus an assist in Fridays win over the Flames. In Saturdays triumph, Ellis made 32 saves including 12 in the scoreless opening period. He was drafted by Quebec in the June 1992 NHL Entry Draft. TEAM NOTES BOWLING GREEN STATE UNIVERSITY -- Junior center Sean Pronger has moved into the top five in scoring leaders in the league with his seven point weekend in the Falcons two victories. Pronger is currently working on his second six-game point streak of the season. Pronger has recorded four two-goal games this year. FERRIS STATE UNIVERSITY -- Freshman netminder Seth Appert (Cottage Grove, Minnesota) made his first collegiate appearance Saturday night for the Bulldogs and turned aside 34 WMU shots to record the 7-4 win over the visiting Broncos. UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT CHICAGO -- Freshman left wing Rob Hutson has scored nine of the Flames 23 power play goals this season and his nine man-advantage markers lead the CCHA. UIC is currently tied with Ohio State, but the Flames have the tiebreaker based on their 2-1-0 record vs. the Buckeyes this year. KENT STATE UNIVERSITY -- Sophomore right wing Dean Sylvester is tied-for-third in goal scoring with 16 markers. Last year, he scored just seven goals all season. Sylvester has four multiple-goal games including two hat tricks. His goal totals include seven power play markers, three game-winners, and two empty net tallies. LAKE SUPERIOR STATE UNIVERSITY -- Saturday nights 4-1 loss at Michigan State snapped the Lakers eight-game (5-0-3) unbeaten streak. It was also the first road loss for LSSU this year and first since being swept at Ohio State late last year. The Lakers have outscored their opponents by a 32-9 score in the third period this season. MIAMI UNIVERSITY -- The Redskins will be looking to extend their home unbeaten streak this weekend when they entertain the Ferris State Bulldogs for two contests in Oxford. Miami is 4-0-0 on home ice this year (WMU is 6-0-1at home in league play, but lost a non-conference home game to Merrimack). UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN -- Juniors David Oliver and Cam Stewart will be playing for Canada in the USA Cup (Dec. 18-20) in Albany, NY. Senior captain David Harlock is playing in the Izvestia Tournament in Moscow from Dec. 12-21. MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY -- With Bill Shalawylos assist (his first point of the season) Saturday night, every Spartan that has played in a game except back-up goaltender Eric Kruse has recorded at least one point. Number one netminder Mike Buzak had an assist in Michigan States 2-2 tie at Ferris State on November 28th. UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME -- Senior center Curtis Janicke has 11 points (three goals, eight assists) in his last six games for the Irish. Fellow classmate David Bankoske notched his 99th career assist Saturday night. He needs nine more assists to pass Dave Poulin for sixth place on the all-time Notre Dame assist charts. OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY -- Sophomore defenseman Steve Richards has eight points (two goals, six assists) in his last three games. He has had two assists in each of the last three Buckeye contests. For the season, Richards has three goals and 11 assists for 14 points in 15 games. He is also a +5 in the last three games. WESTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY -- Senior center Pat Ferschweiler tallied his eighth goal of the season Saturday night equalling his 1991-92 goal output. Senior left wing Byron Witkowski scored twice on Friday to raise his season goal total to nine one short of his career best (10 for the 1990-91 campaign). UNIVERSITY OF ALASKA FAIRBANKS -- Senior center Shawn Ulrich has moved into sixth place on the Nanooks all-time scoring list with 57 goals and 90 assists for 147 points. Matt Koleski (1986-90) is fifth with 150 points. Ulrichs 90 helpers place him fifth on the UAF all-time assist chart. FIVE CCHA PLAYERS SELECTED FOR SPANGLER CUP -- Michigan defenseman Aaron Ward, Miami center Brian Savage and Lake Superior center Clayton Beddoes along with former CCHA players Mark Astley (LSSU) and Dale Krentz (MSU) will be representing Canada in the Spangler Cup (Dec. 22 - Jan. 1) in Palaghiaccio Biasca, Switzerland. Power play units have combined for 173 man-advantage goals in 825 opportunities for a .210 power play efficiency percentage. Twenty-nine shorthanded goals have been scored in the 71 league games.
