Summary:

RPI started slow but once they got things going, they dominated Union
and took a 9-3 win at Houston Field House. 8 different players scored
goals and 17 players had at least one point for RPI.

Early on, RPI was sloppy and Union was playing well. Union took a 1-0
lead on a shorthanded breakaway by Cory Holbrough. Near the end of the
period with the game tied at 1, Union had a goal disallowed. One
referee signaled goal, but the other said it went in off a high Union
stick. It definitely did go in off a high stick - the only question
was if it was an RPI stick or a Union stick. Just a few seconds later,
the Engineers scored a power play goal to take the lead for good. So
instead of going into the break up 2-1, Union trailed 2-1.

RPI started playing much better in the second period. They scored 3
goals in the first half of the second period. RPI's third goal was
practically a gift from Union's Luigi Villa who came out of his net to
play the puck, and couldn't get back in time. With the help of lots of
RPI penalties, Union fought back to make the score 5-3 going into the
second period break. They scored both goals on the power play, the
second while skating with a 5-3 manpower advantage.

Once the third period started, it didn't take long to figure out who was
going to win. RPI scored 4 times in the first 3:13 of the period.
After their ninth goal, Tim Carvel replaced Neil Little in goal for RPI.
Carvel was outstanding in his time, stopping all 10 shots he faced.

Both teams will now break for the holidays. RPI's next games are in the
RPI Tournament Dec 29-30, and Union's next game will be at Merrimack on
New Year's Day. The break couldn't come at a better time for Union. In
addition to the players already out with injuries, they lost defeseman
Scott Boyd with a sprained knee during the 2nd period. Union is now 1-5
in the ECAC, 1-7 overall. RPI is 5-2 in the ECAC, 6-2-2 overall.
