In the first full weekend of Hockey East play in which six teams made their league debuts, only Maine came away with two wins, outscoring Merrimack 25-3 on the weekend. Six Maine players had six or more points in the series: Paul Kariya 2-7--9, Eric Fenton 5-3--8, Patrice Tardif 4-4--8, Jim Montgomery 2-6--8, Michel Latendresse 1-6--7, and Cal Ingraham 3-3--6. I believe the 25 goals is the most scored by a single team in a two- game set in HE history. In Maine's 14-1 win Friday, the Black Bears came one goal away from tying the record for most goals scored in a HE game which is 15, set by BC about 7 seven years ago. That was not Merrimack's worst loss to a DivI team; Merrimack lost 17-3 to RPI in 1963. It was, however, Merrimack's worst loss since joining Hockey East in 1989. Everyone else split their home-and-home series, with BU, NU, PC, and UNH winning on home ice and BC & UMass-Lowell each winning on the road. BC goalie Josh Singewald rebounded from a rough first period Friday night (5 goals by Lowell) to post a strong 3-2 win Saturday. The win Saturday was new BC coach Steve Cedorchuk's first league win. BC got goals from two defensemen in the 3-2 win: freshman Tom Ashe (brother of former Plattsburgh player Steve Ashe) got the Eagles on the board in the first, and fellow blueliner Ian Moran pulled BC into a 2-2 tie late in the second before Rob Canavan scored the winner halfway through the third. In the first game, Lowell's Shane Henry scored twice as the Chiefs' five goals in five minutes halfway through the first held up. BC broke Dwayne Roloson's shutout with 8:44 left and added another by Don Chase for the 5-2 final. As was posted, BU scored three times late in the third Friday to pull away from Northeastern, 9-4. Doug Friedman, Mark Bavis and Jacques Joubert each had a pair of goals. NU rebounded with a 2-1 win in the rematch at Northeastern. Providence got its first win of the year Friday, 6-4 over UNH; Brady Kramer scored halfway through the third to make it 6-4. UNH rebounded with a good showing in net by freshman Trent Cavicchi for a 5-2 win at UNH the next night in front of a sellout crowd at Snively. NEXT WEEKEND The big series is Maine's pair at BU. The game Saturday (11/21) will be shown on NESN. NESN will also cover the NH-BC game the night before, as the Wildcats and Eagles play a home-and-home pair. Also playing home-and-homes will be Merrimack and Northeastern, and Lowell and Providence.
