In the past, the WCHA HAS had more than 8 teams in it's league. They did the schedule (now this is from memory, so it might not be 100% correct), so that eight of the teams played each other four times and played the two extra teams only twice in one season. The teams that were only played twice received DOUBLE the points for that series. NOW, each team gets two points for a win and one point for a tie...doubling the points made it four points for a win and two points for a tie. This meant that all the "series" were worth the same, although it did give a somewhat unfair advantage to certain teams when playing others. This was also balanced out by playing the same team you only saw twice in season one at home, the next season (#2) away. For instance, if the Gophers would play Wisconsin and North Dakota only twice in season one at Mariucci, then in season two they would play Wisconsin and North Dakota on-the-road. All four series in two years would count for double points. The teams would then rotate so that each team wasn't always having the same teams play for double the points. (Maybe this was Keith was getting at in his post.) This can make scheduling a nightmare and requires much advance planning. I also wonder if this "double-points" system will come into play again. Thanks to Glen for posting the info from the East Lansing paper, we have seen nothing in the papers here! Carol U of M GO Gophers!!!
