Report #23/April 11, 1992 LAKE SUPERIOR CLAIMS NCAA TITLE ANN ARBOR-Lake Superior State University claimed the fourth NCAA title by a CCHA team with a 5-3 win over Wisconsin in Saturday's national championship game in Albany, New York. It is the second NCAA title for the Lakers (first was in 1988 in Lake Placid with a 4-3 overtime win over St. Lawrence). The Lakers will begin the 1992-93 season with a 10-game winning streak that began on March 6-7 with a home sweep of Western Michigan (6-1, 3-2). CCHA PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Paul Constantin, a senior right wing from Lake Superior State University, has been selected CCHA Player of the Week for the final week of the 1991-92 season. Constantin, a 6-2, 180-pound native of Burlington, Ontario, scored three goals in the Lakers two games this past weekend. In Thursday's 4-2 win over Michigan State in an NCAA Semi-Final contest, Constantin scored the first two Lake Superior goals. In Saturday's 5-3 Championship game win over Wisconsin, he scored the first Laker marker cutting the Badger lead to 2-1. Constantin, a June 1988 draft selection of the Vancouver Canucks, scored six goals in the final three games of his collegiate career. In his first three seasons combined, he scored 20 goals. Michigan senior Denny Felsner led all NCAA Division I skaters with 94 points on 42 goals and 52 assists. Lake Superior junior netminder Darrin Madeley led all goaltenders with a 2.07 goals against average and a .917 save percentage. CCHA players claim five first team All-America spots: The four first team All-CCHA unanimous honorees (goalie Darrin Madeley, LSSU; defenseman Mark Astley, LSSU; forward Denny Felsner, Michigan; and forward Dwayne Norris, Michigan State) all were selected to the 1991-92 Titan/AHCA West All-American First Team. In addition, Michigan State defenseman Joby Messier also garnered a spot on the first team. The West All-Americans were announced on Saturday, April 11th at the Decathlon Club of Bloomington, Minnesota. This is the second most CCHA players selected to the First team (1988-89 all six first team selections were from CCHA teams). LSSU netminder Darrin Madeley was the only repeat first team selection from a year ago, while Felsner moved up from the second to the first team. Dallas Drake of Northern Michigan was also selected to the first team. Mason selected AHCA national Coach-of-the-Year: Michigan State University head coach Ron Mason has been selected the AHCA Division I Coach of the Year by the American Hockey Coaches Association. The Spartans, picked fifth in the CCHA during the pre-season, finished in third place in both the CCHA regular season and playoffs while also being a semi-finalist in the NCAA tournament. Mason will receive the Spencer Penrose Award during the AHCA Annual Convention in Naples, Florida on Sunday, April 26. Mason is the third CCHA coach to be selected national coach of the year (Rick Comley, NMU, 1980 and Frank Anzalone, LSSU, 1988). Bowling Green's Jerry York won in 1977 while coach at Clarkson. NOTES (Cont.) Hobey Baker Winner Named: University of Maine senior Scott Pellerin received the 1992 Hobey Baker Memorial Award in an announcement last Friday in Albany. CCHA Teams claim national title in the East: All four of the CCHA's national championship teams were crowned in the East. Bowling Green and Lake Superior were winners in Lake Placid in 1984 and 1988, respectively. Michigan State won the 1986 title at the Providence Civic Center and the Lakers title in 1992 in Albany.
