ECAC SPORTS NEWS RELEASE ECAC EAST MEN'S ICE HOCKEY ALL-STARS ANNOUNCED Middlebury's Kent Hughes is ECAC Player of the Year Bowdoin's Marcello Gentile is ECAC Rookie of the Year CENTERVILLE, Mass. -- KENT HUGHES of Middlebury College has been voted the Eastern College Athletic Conference East Men's Ice Hockey Player of the Year by the region's 16 sports information directors and head coaches. MARCELLO GENTILE of Bowdoin College has been chosen as the ECAC East Ice Hockey Rookie of the Year. Hughes, a senior forward from Beaconsfield, Que., finished with 15 goals and 48 assists for 63 points in 26 games -- this being a career high. Hughes is graduating from the Middlebury hockey program just shy of a 200 point career. He has also been named to the ECAC East All-Star team for the second year. Hughes will be presented the ECAC Player of the Year award at the New England Hockey Writers Dinner, on Thursday, April 9 at the Somerville City Club in Somerville, Mass. Gentile, a resident of Newton, Mass., finished the season of 21 games with 14 goals, eight assists for 22 points. The 14 goals is one below the all-time scoreing record at Bowdoin for a freshman. [The record of 15 was set by Ron Marcellus in the 1978-79 season - Craig]. Gentile had an excellent rookie season, scoring a hat trick against UMass-Boston as well as being named ECAC East Rookie of the Week in January. Joining Hughes on the ECAC First Team on the front line is DEREK BETTENCOURT (Murraysville, Pa.) of Colby College. This senior was named to the All-Star team last yeaer and compiled 20-16-36 in just 18 games this past season, and BRYAN KRYGIER (Huntsville, Mich.) of the University of Connecticut, who finished the season with 38-54-92 and ends his college career with 127 assists and 219 points. Among the first team defensemen is another product of Middlebury College, DOUG COCHRAN (Northbrook, Il.). The three-time ECAC All-Star senior finished with 9-21-30 in 20 games after missing six games due to injury. CHRIS POTTER (Warwick, R.I.), a junior from UConn is the other defenseman and was the fourth highest on the team in assists with 36 in 24 games. The ECAC All-Star goalie is MARK KURYAK (N. Tonawanda, N.Y.) a junior keeper from Babson College. He finished the season with a .927 save percentage and a 2.15 GAA in just 16 games. Kuryk was named the MVP of the East tournament at Middlebury and heldped the Beavers capture the championship by turning away 54 shots in two games. The ECAC Second Team forwards include sophomore MATT ROBBINS (Westford, Mass.) of Salem State, senior BILL AVERY (Chelmsford, Mass.) of Norwich University and junior MIKE KRYGIER (Northville, Mich.) of UConn. Named to the second team for All-Star defensemen is senior SCOTT LEDDY (Hamden, Conn.) of Trinity College and senior BILL INNOCENT (Walpole, Mass.) of UMASS- Boston.
