Brown scored 3 of their goals on the power play, including the game-winner with under 2 minutes left in regulation. Union got on the board early with a power play goal at 3:10. Rick Burchill deflected Scott Whitney's shot from the point. Brown took control of the play after that goal, and scored on two power plays, both a direct result of the outstanding play of defenseman Mike Brewer. The first goal, at 6:21 was set up when Brewer sent Mike Ross in to the Union zone on Bill McKenna. McKenna was forced to drag down Ross, but Ross was able to score from his knees. McKenna was called for the penalty, and under a minute later Brewer skated all the way from behind his own net, past defenseman Dean Goulet and beat Mike Gallant to give Brown the lead, 2-1. Union had two power plays late in the period, but could only manage a few shots on goal. The second period was one of the better periods Union has played all season. They stayed out of the penalty box, and played very good defense. Freshman Matt Kelley scored his first collegiate goal when his shot deflected off Dalton Menhall's skate right back to him. He was able to hit the open net, as Brett Haywood was down on the ice. Unfortunately for Union, Brown also played excellent defense. Several Union 2-on-1's were broken up before they could get a shot off. The highlight of the period came late. Scott Hanley had a shot at an open net with Gallant down on the ice. Somehow, Gallant stretched his arm to deflect the puck with the tip of his glove to preserve the tie for the Dutchmen. The Union radio announcers described it as the best save of the season, as did Gazette reporter Ken Schott. Brown dominated much of the third period, but Union was able to stay in the game, thanks to Mike Gallant. The teams traded even-strength goals, with Ross scoring to give Brown the lead at 13:13, and Menhall tying it at 14:20. With the score again tied, the teams were skating end to end, with each side getting good chances to score. But with 3:31 left in the game, Menhall came in an hit Haywood. Pierre Belanger called the penalty, and Brown had a power play. The same thing happened when Brown played at Union in November. They scored on a late 5-on-3 to take a 3-2 win. The Bears put an incredible amount of pressure on Gallant on the power play. He made a few impressive game-saving stops. As the power play was about to expire, Brewer sent Hanley in, who beat Gallant with just 1 second left on the power play, and 91 seconds left in the game. It was Brown's third power play goal of the night. Union was unable to break into the zone in the final minute and a half, and Brown came away with the 4-3 win. Union is now 1-11-1, still in 11th place in the ECAC, 2-13-1 overall. Brown breaks a 6-game winless streak to imrove to 6-5-2 in the ECAC, 6-12-2 overall. Brown will host RPI tonight at 7, and Union travels to Harvard for a 3:00 afternoon start. Harvard has 999 victories with their 5-1 win over RPI last night, and would love to make the Dutchmen their 1000th victim. -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Jim Teresco Union College | | [log in to unmask] Schenectady, NY 12308 | | [log in to unmask] Owner/GM - Amsterdam Ice-9 of the BBL | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
