Clarkson beat Div. III Plattsburgh at home last night by a score of 6-2. Goals: Clarkson 1 2 3- 6 Plattsburgh 0 0 2- 2 Goal Tending: Clarkson: Rogles, 26 saves Plattsburgh: Mandello, 36 saves Scoring: Freshamn Todd Marchant had his first collegiate hat trick. Scott Thomas added two goals and freshman defenseman Brian Mueller had the other talley. O'Malley scored a short handed goal for Plattsburgh and Peron scored the other Plattsburgh goal. Clarkson really controlled the whole game. The game was a December addition to the schedule after the Czechoslavakian team withdrew. Clarkson plays St. Lawrence on Saturday and I guess the team wanted a game the weekend before. St. Lawrence was idle over the weekend. Clarkson dominated the play throughout the game, looking in control and keeping ahead of Plattsburgh. They really didn't open up any lead or run the score up. I guess that the RPI-RIT game was an example of what might happen and Clarkson didn't want to risk it. Clarkson only led 1-0 after the first period. However, it easily could have been 4-0 if Plattsburgh St. goalie Mandello hadn't made some excellent saves, including stopping Marchant on a break away. Mandello is a really good goalie and played well all night. The only flaw being that he tends to give up rebounds right out in front of himself. Either several Clarkson forwards fanned on these rebounds or Mandello had to make a big second save. Clarkson kept on controlling the play in the second period, scoring twice and allowing only 7 shots on goal. Plattsburgh did have several rushes into the Clarkson zone, but when the time came to pass the puck to other man, a Clarkson defenseman would either intercept the pass or take out the puck handler. Plattsburgh scored two goals a third of the way into the final period. This forced Clarkson to take a time out, gather themselves and come out a score their fourth goal a minute or two later. A lot of the Clarkson goals came on nice passing and puck movement plays, no real scrammbles in front of the net. The difference in skill level and ability was obvious, but Plattsburgh is a fine team and could some Div I teams. This was Plattsburgh's third game in four nights. Clarkson is really working on maintaining a high work ethic for the rest of the season. This was evident as players would huddle before certain face-offs. The team was mentally into the game and did not play down to the level of the opposition. The team must be really happy with this aspect of their game, considering the significance of the St. Lawrence game. Defenseman Ed Henrich did not skate. He last played half of the first period against Brwon. Hopefully he will be back Saturday. Mike Zak Clarkson '87, '90,...
