Since Carol was too sick to come Friday night (can you imagine!) and obviously won't be into work on the holiday, I just thought I'd type a little info about the games, although I don't have any real details. Friday night the Gophers came right out and dominated pretty much the whole game. The final was 9-2 and, if I recall corrrectly, the goals were scored by 8 different players, including two by Laylin and the first collegiate goal for sophomore Todd Westlund. After Westlund's goal, the Gopher's 8th, the team cleared the bench to congratulate him. When referee Bob Ames indicated that he was going to call a delay-of-game penalty, Woog tried to call a time out, but Ames just laughed. Woog later said he thought the penalty was worth it. Question: could Ames have allowed that? How do the rules work for time outs and delay penalties? Saturday's game was not really the most exciting we've seen all year either, but at least Carol was well enough to be there! The Gophers jumped out to a 5-1 lead early in the second period, and it looked as if we were in for a repeat of Friday night, but then the Gophers went to sleep. The Huskies scored a power-play goal late in the second and then an even-strength goal in the 3rd to make it 5-3 and give us a little bit of a scare. MTU coach Newell Brown then pulled his goalie with about 3 minutes to go in the game and the Huskies defensemen blocked several chances before Larry Olimb managed to score to put the game away 6-3. driv-l note: (*) ----------- The Gophers nearly got a penalty to the band (to go with the one for clearing the bench the night before) when Ames issued a warning to the band after they struck up the traditional Battle Hymn of the Republic with 1:00 remaining, as they always do on the Saturday night of a sweep. By the time the warning was issued, however, they were finishing the number anyway. Otherwise we could have had a two-overenthusiasm-penalty weekend! * Carol: I think this is relevant enough that I'll skip the Rouser pennance. :-) :-) Pam Go Gophers!!!
