The Bears adjusted well to the full size olympic ice at the Sullivan Arena, and boasted very impressive passes, although I don't think that they are used to the hard checking style game that the Seawolves played. It was nice to see rookie defenseman Martin Bakula back playing after being out with a sprained knee for four games. Unfortunately, he got hit, and I didn't see him play much in the later part of the game, and it is not known if he will participate in the series next week with Fairbanks. Bakula is the UAA defenseman from Czechoslovakia that can either skate right on though his opponent's defense while the puck, or go around, whichever he so desires, and it is a lot of fun to watch him. The Seawolves got on the board early in the first period when three UAA skaters came charging down the rink from their own blue line. Trent Pankewicz shot the puck in from about 20 feet straight in front of the net. However, not five minutes later, Bakula took a fall, and Mark Fabbro of the Bears passed the puck through the crease to Kelly Jones who beat Krake for the goal. Again less then five minutes later, UAA's Brad Stewart passed the puck from deep within his defensive zone to Steve Bogoyevac who was waiting at the Bear's blue line. Bogoyevac skated it in 1-0, took the shot, and Kevin Brown came in behind him to pop the rebound home and end the scoring for the period. At 10:05 in the second, while on a 4-3 power play, Trent Pankewicz fed Dean Larson a beautiful pass, and he knocked it in to raise UAA to 3-1. Six minutes later, Kevin Brown slipped Derek Donald the puck from behind the red line. Donald took a couple of seconds to get into position, but when Donald shot, he scored his first of two goals for the night. While on the power play 19 seconds before the end of the second, Brown's Chris Kaban shot the puck at Krake. Krake made the initial save, but the puck trickled through and was sitting right on the edge of the goal line next to the right post, and Mike Brewer just gave it a little nudge to break UAA's three unanswered goal scoring streak. The next two goals, the first for Brown, and the second for UAA were both power play goals. Both goals were the result of setting up, and good puck movement. The Seawolves closed out the scoring for the game when Mitch Kean beat Brett Haywood to the net. I didn't really see the shot, so I can't say much about it. This was a well played game, and I look forward to watching Saturday night's rematch. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [log in to unmask] asslk@alaska
