My daughter drove the Zamboni as part of her work at the Riverfront Park ice rink in Spokane while she was between 16 and 19 years old! > North Dakota 6 at Northern Michigan 6 WC ot > Both of the UND-NMU games last weekend were great to watch! This was especially true of the Saturday night tie. (NMU has about a .500 record on Saturdays, while being something like 9-0-1 on Fridays!) The Wildcat players were very disappointed to fail to win Saturday, (they had a 4-1 lead at one point but had a very weak 3-minute stretch during which UND followed the 4th NMU goals with 2 quick ones of their own--but frankly, the Fighting Sioux have LOTS of firepower and I think we should give credit where credit is due; those were good efforts) and so were a lot of the fans, but I think most of us had to admit the Saturday game was a great way to spend the evening. In the overtime (shades of the '91-'92 NCAA championship final!) at least one UND shot hit the crossbar, and at the very end of the ot Tony Szabo of the Wildcats had an almost-point-blank shot the goalie stopped (after the game Rick Comley said Tony should have passed off to a teammate--maybe Mark Beaufait--who he said was wide open). The only negative aspect of the game was a fight which started up near the end and resulted in a double minor for Jim Hiller and a misconduct (10 min) penaly for a UND player. One other notable event was the Wildcats'last goal of the evening, scored by Scott Beattie. Our seats are down low and a little in front of the goal NMU attacks in the first and third (and overtime) periods, so it was quite close to us. My wife was pretty certain Scott batted the puck in the net with his hand. The UND players argued with the referee quite a bit about something. Anyway, I stayed up late to watch the tape delay broadcast, and was able to assure my spouse that Beattie knocked the puck (which was on a rebound) down to his feet with his hand and then shot it in the net with his stick. But it was a bang-bang play, I'll say that! (Slightly biased query: is there anyone in Division I who is quicker than Scott Beattie?!) *********************************** * Steve Christopher, NMU * * "Go 'Cats!''Going for two in '92!" * * [log in to unmask] * ***********************************
