UAA and UAF Athletic Directors, Ron Petro and Lynn Lashbrook, respectively, have been working together in attempt to join either the WCHA or the CCHA for the last couple of months. Today, in the Anchorage Daily News sports section there is an article concerning a deal the two have made. From Doyle Woody, Assistant Sports Editor: (AD's from UAA and UAF) have agreed to a deal that gives UAA one strong proposal and a possible safety net. Petro said UAA will present its application to the Western Collegiate Hockey Association for admission in 1992-93 and UAF will table its application. UAF, meanwhile, will apply to the CCHA for affiliate membership that allows it a play-in to the CCHA playoffs. UAA will table its application to the CCHA. UAF's proposal would also allow UAA, should it be rejected by the WCHA, to play UAF for the right to play in the CCHA playoff...(Petro stated) "Both of us making proposals (to the WCHA) would have caused some uneasiness. We have to give a lot of credit to Lynn Lashbrook and UAF for doing that." Me again: Just a little more about the proposal set up by UAA. I think I mentioned this before, but just in case. UAA has included in the proposal 25 plane tickets to Alaska and guaranteed that no class time will be missed by WCHA teams because of travel. The plan includes flying on Thursdays, and returning to Campus on Sundays. Also stressed in the proposal is the Sullivan Arena, which is rumored as one ofthe finest college hockey facilities in the nation. The rink has averaged 5,999 fans per game. Another plus for the WCHA is the rule which states that games played in Alaska are exempt from the 34 game limit. I hope no one thinks that I am persuading. I am trying to relay some of the facts of the proposal. Hopefully thing will work out for both UAA and UAF as well as the WCHA and the CCHA. Melanie Daniels [log in to unmask]
