Results of the Salem State Invitational, held at Rockett Arena last weekend: Saturday, January 4: Elmira 9, UMass-Dartmouth 1 Salem State 10, Fitchburg State 2 Sunday, January 5: Consolation: Fitchburg State 5, UMass-Dartmouth 4 Championship: Salem State 4, Elmira 1 Notes on some of the games: Salem State 10, Fitchburg State 2 The Vikings cruised into the tournament finals behind Craig Seabury's six goals and two assists, while linemate Mike Lecroix contributed a goal and five assists. Elmira 9, UMass-Dartmouth 1 Elmira put this game away quickly, with five goals in the first period and a 22-3 margin in shots on goal (for the game, the Soaring Eagles outshot the Corsairs 46-12). This was the fourth straight game in which Elmira did not allow a power-play goal, but the Eagles had a pretty easy task in that area, since they were not called for a penalty all night (Dartmouth was whistled for three). Joe Caswell got things rolling for Elmira with a score 1:58 into the game, and Bernie Cassell added the first of his two goals two minutes later. Bob Carroll brought Dartmouth to within one when he scored at the 8:46 mark, but it was all Eagles after that. The scoring barrage included a hat trick by Bob McGee and Peter Feola's first goal of the season. Elmira goal- tender Tom O'Brien recorded six saves before leaving the game at 10:54 of the second period; replacement Dave Laudato stopped all five shots he faced. Dartmouth's Sean Sullivan stopped 26 shots in two periods of work, and Dave Coughlin made 11 saves in the third. Salem State 4, Elmira 1 In last season's Elmira Invitational, Salem State beat the host Elmira team to win the championship. The Soaring Eagles were hoping to return the favor on Sunday at Salem State's tournament, but they suffered a big blow when head coach Glenn Thomaris suspended his entire second line of Bob Holmes (the team's leading scorer), Matt Weir, and Greg Moore for the game because of "disciplinary problems". An anonymous source close to the team told the Elmira _Star-Gazette_ that the three players had all missed Saturday night's midnight curfew. The players themselves did not comment. [aside to Mark Daly: the paper didn't say any more than this -- have you heard anything else about this incident? Also, has there been any resolution in the disorderly-conduct charges against Tom O'Brien and Bob McGee from back in November? The last I heard, you had mentioned that both had pleaded not guilty, and they seemed to have a pretty good case] Elmira scored first at 14:17 of the first period, when Joe Caswell poked home a pass from Kyle Kirkpatrick, but Salem State took control of the game in the second, when they scored four times. Craig Seabury got things going for the Vikings 21 seconds into the period, beating Elmira goalie Tom O'Brien low. Seabury would later notch a second goal on the power play, and Salem State also got tallies from John Khacha- dorian and Dan Bates. O'Brien left the game after the second period, having made 25 saves, and Dave Laudato finished up for the Eagles, stopping seven shots. Salem State goalie Mike Gregorio made 26 saves. Seabury's eight goals and two assists on the weekend made him an easy choice as tournament MVP. -- Bill Fenwick | Send your HOCKEY-L poll responses to: Cornell '86 and probably '94 | [log in to unmask] LET'S GO RED!!
