From an article in the Star Tribune by John Gilbert (12/6/91) STOLP HONORED: Gophers goalie Jeff Stolp is WCHA co-player of the week. After the Gophers swept North Dakota 4-2 and 8-2 last weekend. Stolp lowered his league goals-against average to 2.68 and his save percentage to .897. He shares the honor with Northern Michigan's Dallas Drake, who had four goals and five assists for the Wildcats last weekend, even though they split at Colorado College. The Gophers lead WCHA teams in penalty killing at 84 percent. The WCHA statistics list Stolp as 2.79 and .898 for all games. The league has combined nonconference games with league games in its statistics, making it impossible to calculate WCHA leaders in any category. U.S. JUNIOR TEAM PLAYERS: Gophers sophomore Craig Johnson and freshman Darby Hendrickson have been selected for the U.S. Junior National team, which will participate in the World Junior Tournament this month. Both linemates, have put off deciding whether they will accept the honor. "I left it completely up to both of them," coach Doug Woog said. "There are some good reasons both want to go and other good reasons they both want to stay with us. They have my blessing if they want to go, but I didn't say they had to go. They want to think about it a little more, and they're undecided at this point." If Johnson and Hendrickson go with the Junior Team, they will miss the Gophers tournament Dec 21-22, a Dec 30th exhibition against Calgary University and a series at Michigan Tech on Jan 3-4. The tournament -- with Providence, Boston College and Bowling Green -- could be important in national rankings for the Gophers, who have won six straight. The Tech series could be important in the WCHA race. ETC: St Cloud State suffered a blow when sophomore defenseman Tony Burns left school because of academic problems. He reportedly is headed for Toledo to try to start a pro career. That's all from Minnesota today. Carol U of M Go Gophers!!!
