A little more on Colgate coach Terry Slater's condition. Dr. Merrill Miller, who is in contact with Slater's family and the physicians at Crouse Irving, said that Slater has shown some response to his family. She also said that the clot is being treated with medication which may help dissolve it and that surgery is not being considered at the moment. Colgate co-captains Jason Greyerbiehl and Dale Band visited Slater briefly Sunday night, and then met with the rest of the team Monday. In accordance with the Slater family's wishes, no other details about the situation have been released. Former players under Slater, including Clarkson coach Mark Morris and assistant coach Greg Drechsel, and current Detroit Red Wing goalie Dave Gagnon, have expressed their sympathy and concern. Greyerbiehl and Band said that the current team was "shocked and numb" after hearing the news. The team did not skate Monday, although that was partly because there were problems with the ice at Starr Rink. Prayer services for the coach were held at Colgate this morning. Just to summarize the rest of the article that Gail mentioned -- Slater has been at Colgate since 1977 and is the team's all-time winningest coach with a 250-180-23 record. He was named the 1990 ECAC and NCAA Coach of the Year after the Red Raiders won the ECAC regular-season and tournament titles and made it to the NCAA championship game that year. Slater is also a former professional hockey player and was head coach of the Cincinnati Stingers in the World Hockey League and of the Toledo Blades in the International League. Durocher, the interim head coach, has been an assistant at Colgate for the last seven seasons. He previously was an assistant coach at Boston University for five years and was a goalie on BU's 1977-78 NCAA champion team. Personally, I'm as stunned as anyone else to hear about this. I wish Coach Slater and his family the best of luck as he recovers from his stroke. -- Bill Fenwick | Send your HOCKEY-L poll responses to: Cornell '86 and probably '94 | [log in to unmask] LET'S GO RED!!
