Attendance: 4044 Summary: Union jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but could not hold on, as RPI came back to win 6-4. RPI outshot Union 52-19, as Union only managed 5 shots on goal in the second half of the game. The first period has been a problem for Union in quite a few games this season, but not in this game. Both teams had a few good chances early, first with Union on a 5-on-3 advantage, then RPI on a 5-on-3. RPI scored first with 2 seconds left on a power play at 6:46. RPI dominated play through most of the first, but could not get another shot past Union goalie Mike Gallant, who had 19 saves in the period. Union got some breaks late in the period. RPI goalie Sean Kennedy was trying to clear a puck into the corner, but he put it right on the stick of Dalton Menhall, who beat Kennedy to tie it up. Just 19 seconds later, Rick Clifford came in on a partial break and beat Kennedy to give Union a 2-1 lead at the first intermission. A Union power play carried into the beginning of the second period, and the Dutchmen took advantage, scoring with 10 seconds left on the penalty. At 8:44, Scott Whitney took a shot from the left point that Kennedy should have stopped easily, but somehow it got past him for a 4-1 Union lead. Kennedy was replaced with Neil Little, and that was the end of the scoring for Union. Wayne Clarke scored on the power play for RPI at 14:03 to pull RPI to 4-2. Then with Rick Clifford in the box for Union, RPI kept the pressure on Mike Gallant. He got no help from his defense, and Jeff Gabriel brought RPI within 1 at 16:31. Union had a terrible chance on the power play at the end of the second. They couldn't break into the offensive zone, and even iced the puck twice. The third period was all RPI. Union seemed to be afraid to attempt any offense, hoping the one goal lead would stand up. The Engineers tied it up with Rick Burchill in the box on Zachary Dargaty's first goal of the season. Union's defense fell apart, and the pressure was too much on Gallant. Clarke and Hamelin scored RPI's final 2 goals. Although Little only faced 3 shots in the period, 2 were on breakaways by Jayson Flowers and Dalton Menhall. Union had a chance to get their first league win, but could not keep up with RPI in the second half of the game. Union coach Bruce Delventhal summed it up in 2 words, "Dumb penalties." RPI's first 4 goals came on the power play, some of which were set up by penalties behind the play, and in the offensive zone. RPI improves to 2-5 in the ECAC and 6-6 overall, while Union remains in last place at 0-6, 1-7. Tonight Union faces Northeastern in the consolation game at 5:30, and RPI will play SLU for the Championship at 8:30. -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Jim Teresco Union College | | [log in to unmask] Schenectady, NY 12308 | | [log in to unmask] Owner/GM - Amsterdam Ice-9 of the BBL | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
