In an effort to allow others to catch up to me, I'll condense three ideas into this one posting. 1. PLAYERS OF THE WEEK The Hockey East Player of the Week is Providence goalie Mike Heinke, who shut out Merrimack Sunday 4-0 and made 25 saves. He also allowed 5 goals to BU Friday in an 8-5 win. Hockey East Rookie of the Week is Providence's George Breen. ECAC Player of the Week is Dartmouth's Vern Guetens. ECAC Rookie of the Week is Clarkson's Todd Marchant. 2. POSTING FROM NEWSPAPERS I talked to the editor of Merrimack's school paper, Dave Josselyn (that's the editor, not the name of the paper), about this. He says that once an article is published, the information in that article becomes public domain. But you would need permission to quote the entire article or even just pieces of it; saying that "This was written by so-and-so in the Daily Shopper on 12/1/91" is not enough. So my suggestion is, give the facts you read but don't type in the article. I've done this myself before and will have to remember not to do it again. BTW I believe the quotes are public domain so you can use those, but it's only fair to give credit to the reporter who obtained them (although not legally required, apparently). In that spirit, we come to... 3. NEW BC COACH NEWS, PART XXVIII First, let me warn you that most of this is not new, and none of it is earth-shattering. But some of the words from Gladchuk reiterate rumors we've heard before. Joe Concannon writes in today's (11/26/91) Boston Globe that BC AD Chet Gladchuk still hasn't begun to officially work on nailing down a successor to Len Ceglarski. Gladchuk wants to remain open-minded and consider anyone who may be interested. Specifically mentioned are the three I listed recently, SLU's Marsh, BG's York, and Maine's Walsh, plus a fourth, Yale's Tim Taylor. These are rumors, not names spoken by Gladchuk. There is precedent for Gladchuk going outside the BC circle, as he did when he hired football coach Tom Coughlin. Gladchuk believes a new coach should "be aware" of the fact that BC has won only 2 Beanpots in 26 years and should have "some experience" with HE and the NC** championships. (quotes are Concannon's) This would seem to rule out all but Walsh, whom many believe to be the frontrunner. Also, those in the know at BG say York won't be coming to BC. And, Marsh's name is surfacing more and more lately. In addition, as I mentioned several months ago, Gladchuk is interested in recruiting "the best" student-athletes to BC, which is code for going to Canada (which BC has never done). Concannon reports that associate coach Steve Cedorchuk already has several excellent Canadian players interested in coming to BC. Gladchuk has been receiving letters for 4-5 months, but he has just opened the position, which will be advertised in the next NCAA newsletter. He said, "I think, in the big picture, the type of coach we're looking for for the short term will more than make up for any minor disruptions we're experiencing today. [i.e. by waiting to name a coach - mike] If the coach is involved with the NC[**] Championships, it's conceivable we won't name him until it's over. If it's an in-house candidate who emerges, we may not have to wait that long." I found that to be the most interesting quote in the article. Gladchuk also said that he doesn't want BC to suddenly start getting all its players from Canada; he thinks the priority should remain with local players, yet he said, "...for me to tell a coach who may have a lead on an outstanding young man to simply say no because of past practices is a questionable position." All Gladchuk quotes taken from Concannon's article. - mike
