heading into the first intermission with a power-play go
 two periods with goals by
senior Lance Momotani and sophomore Brian Konowalchuk.
        Saturday, the Pioneers jumped out to an early lead at 6:09 into the game
 on
a goal by senior captain Darren Biggs. MinnesotaUs Jeff Stolp halted DenverUs
scoring for the remainer of the night as the Golden Gophers scored five
unanswered goals.  At 2:55 into the second period, Denver goaltender Bryan
Shoen was struck by a Craig Johnson slap shot and was sent to the training
room for stiches. In the meantime, freshman goaltender Jason Van Herik, in his
second appearance in net, allowed two goals. Shoen, who replaced Van Herik
9:02 later, recorded 21 saves on the evening. Stolp recorded 27 saves on the
night and shut down DUUs power-play as the PioneerUs went 0 for 15 with a man-
advantage.
 
The Coaches:  Head coach Frank Serratore is in his second season with the
Pioneers. He most recently came from the Omaha Lancers of the USHL where he
was general manager and head coach. This past year he signed four players from
his former team in Omaha to join him in Denver.
        Colorado College coach Brad elm of
the Tiger program. His 2
75 career victories rank him 12th on the all-time
active coachesU list. He was previously head coach at U.S. International (1985-
88, San Diego, Cal.) and  head coach at Minnesota (1979-85). Buetow lettered
in hockey, track and football as an undergraduate at the University of
Minnesota. Upon graduation he went on to play professional hockey for one
season with the Cleveland Crusaders of the former World Hockey Association.
Buetow is 5-7-0 in his career versus Denver.
 
Scouting the Tigers:  Colorado College enters the weekend series with a 1-
2-1 record ranking the Tigers sixth in the WCHA standings after two weeks of
competition. The pre-season 8th seeded pick Tigers  defeated  North Dakota
this past weekend, 5-4 in overtime, and  tied Northern Michigan in the season
opener 8-8.  Senior center Steve Strunk (4-3-7), junior defenseman Chris
Hynnes (2-5-7) and sophomore winger Jody Jaraczewski (2-5-7) lead the Tigers
on.  Coach Buetow has used three
 different goaltenders in
four games: junior Denis Casey (0-1-1, 6.28, .783, 124:01), freshman Paul
Frank (1-0-0, 3.70, .833, 64:43) and junior Paul Badalich (0-1-0, 12.00, .727,
60:00).
