1) Some good news and bad news concerning former Cornell star and 1987 ECAC Player of the Year Joe Nieuwendyk, courtesy TSN and THN: First the good news: From The Sporting News 91-92 Yearbook, p. 48 "Predicted Award Winners Conn Smythe Trophy (playoff MVP): Joe Nieuwendyk, Calgary Flames. The Calgary center has quietly become one of the NHL most dependable players..." Then the (real) bad news: From The Hockey News, Sept. 6, p. 14 "Team Canada, already hurt by 13 no-shows, had its roster further depleted by injuries even before the pre-tournament games began. Calgary Flame center Joe Nieuwendyk and New York Ranger right winger Mike Gartner both left the team Aug. 17 with knee injuries. Nieuwendyk injured his left knee when he fell during a Team Canada Red-White game Aug. 11 in Hamilton. It is the same knee Nieuwendyk injured at the 1990 World Championships." Any news on the extent of this injury? Whom do I pay to tell Joe that international competitions are bad for his health! 2) I'm trying hard to forget who owns the San Jose Sharks because I like their uniforms so much. But anyway, all's right with the world now that Cornell has a #1 goalie in the NHL once again (Brian Hayward, SJ), even if the poor guy's going to have a 6+ GAA playing for the Smythe doormat. 3) TSN 91-92 Yearbook lists Kent Manderville as a returnee, but that doesn't mean it's true. Well, is it? Greg Berge Boston, MA LET'S GO RED!
