Attendance: 546 Summary: Union's final season at the Division III level came to a disappointing end with a 6-3 loss to RIT in the 1st round of the ECAC West Tournament. RIT, playing without 3 of their top players due to injuries and suspensions, extended their unbeaten streak against Union to 13 games (11-0-2), dating back to Union's win in the 1985 ECAC West Championship game. RIT came out very strong early, getting several excellent chances in the first few minutes. Goalie Shayne White was sharp though, and stopped RIT through the 1st period. Play turned more in the Union favor late in the period, but RIT goalie Mark Hill was also outstanding. The 2nd Period started with Union on a 5 on 3 power play for 1:42. They got several good chances, but could not put the puck past Hill. When RIT killed off the penalties, the momentum went over to their side. They scored 2 quick goals, both from Todd Person. Union started to climb back midway through the period with a goal from Bill Sedergren at 11:32. Union continued to have excellent chances through the rest of the period, including a shot by Scott Whitney which hit the post with 42 seconds left. RIT came out with 3 goals in the 1st 4:03 of the 3rd period. After seeing 2-1 become 5-1, Union coach Bruce Delventhal called a time out. Following the time out, Union went on the power play, and took advantage of it on Craig Ferrero's 19th of the year. Less that 3 minutes later, Rick Burchill pulled Union to 5-3 with 12:25 left. Under a minute later, Union went back on the power play. RIT coach Eric Hoffberg called time out. He knew the Dutchmen have as much scoring power as his team, and did not want to let a 4-goal lead disappear as Union did earlier in the season against RIT. Union got some good chances, but Hill was outstanding again. Play got kind of sloppy on both sides in the middle of the period. And after killing off another Union power play, RIT put the Dutchmen away with a goal by Forselius at 17:46. Union finishes the season at 17-6-3. RIT improves to 16-9-2. Other results from the ECAC West were #1 Mercyhurst 5, #8 Cortland 2 #2 Elmira 7, #7 Oswego 6 in OT #3 Geneseo 6, #6 Fredonia 5. Pairings for the semifinals will be announced today. Union notes: - Terry Campbell finishes his career with 170 points, the new school record. - Craig Ferrero finishes the season with 49 points, including the team leading total of 19 goals. The Dutchmen return to action in November, hosting Harvard in their home opener! But for now, on to Baseball!!!
