In the last 12 meetings, dating back to 1985, RIT has won 11 and tied 1. The last time Union won was in the 1985 ECAC West Championship Game. Each of the last 3 has gone into overtime. Union finally got a good crowd. 2367 people were treated to a very exciting game. It was probably the largest crowd since the NCAA playoffs against Babson 2 years ago. Union played what was probably its best hockey of the season so far to build up a 4-0 lead over the Tigers by 7:43 of the 2nd. Rick Clifford scored Union's 3rd goal on a breakaway, and assisted on the other 3. Terry Campbell's shorthanded goal would have been the knockout against most teams. But this was not going to be another Union blowout. A team like RIT is not about to hang up the skates halfway through the 2nd period. RIT's Ken Moran and Steve Mirabile led the comeback. The Union defense seemed to forget that this was a good team they were facing. They gave up far too many good opportunities for RIT, and when a team like RIT is given opportunities, they make them pay off. By 6:47 of the third, Union had seen its 4-0 lead turn into a 5-4 deficit. The most painful goal was RIT's 3rd, at 19:11 of the 2nd period. Moran's shot bounced off the glass, and tipped off Mirabile's skate at the right post and trickled past Union goalie Shayne White. Less than a minute and a half after RIT took the lead, Greg Eccleston tied it up for Union on the power play. Late in the 3rd period and on into the overtime, RIT had better chances than Union, but White was able to hold the Tigers scoreless. Union seemed to be playing for the tie, staying back and not taking any chances in the overtime. A loss would have been devastating, after having a 4 goal lead disappear. RIT is now 12-3-2 in the ECAC, good for 4th place in the ECAC West, while Union is 11-3-3 in the league and in 5th place. Union is 12-4-3 overall. The Dutchmen now take to the road for 5 of their last 6 games. They travel to Hamilton Tuesday night for what will most likely mark the end of a great rivalry. Then this weekend is the always tough Maine trip to play Colby and Bowdoin.
