Newberry was on the UW bench and as a ND skater came by Newberry squirted him. The ND player resented this and one thing led to another. Both benches cleared and a major brawl resulted. It seems to me that the intense rivalry(especially for the fans) between Wisc. and North Dakota dates back to this game. The rivalry probably dates back as far as the oldest of us can remember. It was certainly intense in the mid-70s when I was at UND; I remember one brawl in particular: both teams, in full, both sets of coaches, and the trainers, too. It broke out during pre-game warm-ups; no referees on the ice. The AD of UND was on the arena PA, demanding/begging for a cease-fire in the hostilities. The trigger was a bump/elbow at center ice; the cause was a cheap shot by Wisconsin's Norwich in Madison the last series they played. Not to take anything away from the equally-old and equally-hallowed rivalry between the Fighting Sioux and the Golden Gophers, though. Dave Suess [log in to unmask]
