BU is 23-1 all-time, with its only loss coming when a 9-0 win in 1972-73 was reversed and awarded to Merrimack as a forfeit. BU had been struggling on Friday nights with a 1-6-1 record on Friday nights, 1-11-1 dating back to last season. Mike's Stat of the Week: BU mentor Jack Parker is 8-0 this season against teams coached by former Terriers. He is 3-0 against Ron Anderson's Merrimack Warriors, 3-0 against Bill Riley's Lowell Chiefs, and 1-0 each against Jim Higgins' Princeton Tigers and Buddy Powers' RPI Engineers. Stat of the Week 2: with last night's Beanpot triumph, BU is 15-2-0 with the Red Line of Keith Tkachuk, Shawn McEachern, and Tony Amonte intact. The game was actually a close one until McEachern's shorthanded goal with ten seconds left in the second period gave BU a 4-1 lead. BU had opened up a 3-1 lead in the first on goals by Chris McCann (#5), McEachern (#26), and Amonte (#15), with Merrimack's Agostino Casale (#20) cutting the lead to 2-1 before Amonte fired a rocket past The Goose 18 seconds later. The Terriers dominated play in the first, but just as quickly, the momentum swung to Merrimack in the second. The Warriors had pressure, especially late in the period, but they couldn't beat Cashman, and McEachern's SHG just broke their backs. John Barron cut the lead to 4-2 at 10:40, but Tomlinson got that one back just 1:12 later, and Peter Ahola made it 6-2 with 2:32 left. McEachern (2-1--3) and Amonte (1-2--3) were named first and second stars, and The Goose was named third star with 41 saves in the Warrior net. Cashman stopped 29 of 31 shots for BU. BU All-World defenseman (1990 World Juniors) Scott Lachance suffered cartilage damage to his knee in the Beanpot win over Harvard last week and underwent arthroscopic surgery on February 8. He was expected back for the playoffs, which begin at the end of February. at PROVIDENCE 7, MAINE 4 The Friars lost a two-goal lead late in the third period, then got a clutch goal from Rob Gaudreau with 1:03 left to go ahead for good. Two empty-netters clinched it. The win allowed BU to climb ahead of the Black Bears temporarily into second place. This was a very close game, really a 5-4 game. The Friars played extremely good defense on Maine's top players and the Black Bears had few lapses themselves. Brian Straub got Maine on the board at 5:38 of the opening period, but Ian Paskowski knocked in Bob Cowan's rebound to tie it just three minutes later. Dave LaCouture put Maine up 2-1 after one, but Mike Boback got it back for PC as the second period ended tied at 2. After Brian Ridolfi and Boback scored within 1:15 of each other early in the third to give PC the 4-2 lead, it looked like the Friars were going to hold off Maine. But it wasn't over yet as the Black Bears got goals from Scott Pellerin at 8:53 and Brian Downey at 16:45 to tie it again and force PC coach Mike McShane to call a timeout. As the clock neared one minute, Boback worked the puck around the boards behind Mike Dunham, spotted Gaudreau in front and fed his linemate who beat Heinke for the game-winner. With Dunham on the bench, Gary Socha and Gaudreau added empty-netters at 19:24 and 19:59. Dunham had 16 saves while Mike Heinke stopped 26 for PC. No details on the 4-3 Maine win. at BOSTON COLLEGE 5, NEW HAMPSHIRE 2 BC's new GEM line accounted for three goals and five assists as Bill Guerin, David Emma, and Marty McInnis each scored a goal. It was the Eagles' 16th straight home win. Sean Farley put BC up at 2:17, but goals from McInnis at 19:43 of the first and Emma just 58 seconds into the second put the Wildcats down just a little too much. Joe Flanagan got UNH on the board, but David Franzosa and Guerin scored before the end of the period to give BC a commanding 5-1 lead. Greg Klym scored the final goal of the game for UNH in the third period. at NORTHEASTERN 10, LOWELL 7 Dino Grossi's field goal was good as the Huskies recorded only their second Hockey East win of the season and their fifth overall. NU went up 2-0 after the first on goals by Mike Taylor and Matt Saunders. Dave Stevens' goal brought the Chiefs within one, but Peter Schure and Will Averill lit the lamp to put NU ahead 4-1. Each team scored twice more in the second as NU led 6-3. Brian Sullivan and Dave Pensa swapped goals for NU and Lowell early in the third, then Stevens brought the Chiefs closer at 7-5. But Grossi scored three of the next four goals to put away the win. - mike
