Summary:
Jeff Jiampetti and Terry Campbell led the #9 ranked Union College
Skating Dutchmen to an easy win over the Hamilton Continentals. Union came out
strong in the 1st period, with Jayson Flowers scoring at 4:59. That goal
brought the traditional shower of oranges thrown at Hamilton goalie Grant Wood
from the crowd at Achilles Rink. The game was delayed for a few minutes as the
Union players and rink staff cleared the oranges. Union got a bit sloppy midway
though the 1st, but Hamilton could not put the puck in the net. At 18:56, with
the teams skating 4 on 4, Terry Campbell gave Union a 2 goal lead on an
outstanding individual effort. He fought off Continental defenders and on the
third or fourth effort put the puck past Wood.
After Hamilton pulled within 1, Bill Railton gave Union the 2 goal lead
again with a shot from a tough angle that bounced off the far post and in. Then
10 seconds into a power play, Jeff Jiampetti tipped a shot from Greg Eccleston
to extend the lead to 4-1. Rick Clifford added another power play goal before
Hamilton's shorthanded goal made it a 5-2 game at 19:00.
Just 22 seconds into the 3rd, Jiampetti scored again on the power play.
At 11:11 Terry Campbell took another pass from Rick Clifford for Union's final
goal, again with the teams 4 on 4. The game got very rough in the final 6 or 7
minutes, and with Hamilton on a 5 on 3 power play at 18:27, Hamilton scored
again to make the score 7-3. Union goalie Jim Helkie played very well. 2 of the
3 goals came when Hamilton players got past the Union defense, and the other
was on a 5-on-3 penalty kill.
Union improves to 10-2-2 in the ECAC and 11-3-2 overall. The Dutchmen
have lost only once in the last 11 games, that loss being to RPI. The Dutchmen
return to action Saturday night when they host Norwich at 7:30 at Achilles. I
haven't heard anything new about the decision on going Division I. I expect the
decision very soon.
