I am VERY sensitive to exhaust fumes, cigarette smoke, diesel smoke, etc. and while I haven't read anything other than an article in a USA TODAY from last year, I can guarantee that a strange feeling comes over me while the Zamboni is running. Also, the fumes must settle down next to the ice, because when the players skate around before the start of the period I can smell and sense the fumes as they are circulated up and over the glass. This is worse now than in the "old days", since the exhaust fans which used to be turned on to draw cold air in through four huge louvered vents in the gable end were turned off, ironically for "Fan comfort"! (With the addition of Alberding Fieldhouse onto the end of Lynah Rink, the aforementioned exhaust fans were permanently removed). This is, in reality, a serious problem, especially in small rinks without proper ventilation. It should be mandated that all Zambonis (and Halstons, since that's what we have) be converted to run on natural gas. In rinks where propane or natural gas is used, there is far less problem. George.
