Dartmouth played Queens Univ on Friday, its first game under new head
coach, Ben Smith. Compared to the last few seasons (a truly depressing series
of seasons to have lived through), there was a definite imporvement. The 6-1
victory was a team effort. Good solid defense by a young squad combined with
shared goaltending by Freshman Mark Bracco and Sophomore Vern Guetens held the
opponents to one goal scored with about 3 minutes left in the game. Offense
was consistent by all the lines (Coach Smith is still trying different
combinations of players) with a few new faces showing promise (Freshman Scott
Fraser scored 2 goals).
The offense was not overwhelming, but was able to take advantage of
opportunities - something they very rarely did in the last few seasons. In
all, the performance was satisfying and encouraging. We can look forward to a
reasonable season and expect to make the playoffs.
