In a game played Wednesday at the Volpe Complex in North Andover, the Warriors defeated the University of Lowell Chiefs 7-4. The win was a costly one for the Warriors. Sophomore goaltender Yannick Gosselin, who has been the best of Merrimack's three goalies, went down with a leg injury as he was trying to make a save. Mike Doneghey took over. He played well, but against Lowell is one thing. Put him in against BC and see what happens. Merrimack went down 1-0 at 28 seconds of the first. Brendan Flynn scored from Gerry Daley and Steve Albitt. Merrimack tied the game at one at the 3:48 mark. Jim Gibson scored his first goal as a Merrimack Warrior. He picked up a loose puck in front and lifted the puck over Lowell's goalie Mark Richards for the goal. The assist went to Brenden Locke. Lowell went ahead again at the 11:36 mark. It was a weird goal. Greg Carter was announced to have gotten it, but the puck bounced off a Merrimack player, I believe it was Brenden Locke, for the goal. It was unassisted. Jim Gibson came through for the Warriors again. On a 5 on 3 advantage, Gibson picked up the puck out front after a couple of saves by Richards. Gibson banged it home for the goal. It came at 12:26 of the second period. The assists went to Matt Hentges and Alex Weinrich. Merrimack went down again at the 17:08 mark of the second. Steve Albitt was credited for the goal. Assists were announced as Shane Henry and Brendan Flynn. I believe these announcments are incorrect, as the puck was shot in by a defenseman, and all the names are forwards. Anyway, it was a powerplay goal. It was also when Gosselin got hurt. He went down to stop the shot, but when he got up, his leg hurt. He went to the ice behind the net. His team- mates carried him off the ice. Merrimack tied the game at 3 when the man I've been singing the praises of, Rob Atkinson, took a feed out front from Dan Gravelle. Atkinson banged the shot over Richards shoulder for the tie. It came at 1:31 of the third. Merrimack went ahead for the first time at 9:33 of the third. On a wild scramble out front, Teal Fowler banged home the loose puck. Agostino Casale got the assist. Merrimack made it 5-3 when Agostino Casale put a shot off of Richards' glove and into the net. The assists went to Howie Rosenblatt and Teal Fowler. It came at 10:46 of the third. Lowell made it interesting when Brendan Flynn was given credit for a goal (At least on the announcement.) Albitt and Daley got the assists again, but again I think this announcment is wrong, because the puck was shot in by a defenseman. Anyway, it came at 16:00, and made it 5-4. Merrimack got a goal by Dan Gravelle just 25 seconds after the Lowell goal. Gravelle took the pass from, yep, Rob Atkinson, and Gravelle banged it past Richards. The other assist went to Tim Doyle. It made it 6-4. The Warriors got an empty netter from Alex Weinrich, his first as a Warrior. It was an unassisted goal at 19:36 of the third. Correction: The Casale goal, the fifth by the Warriors, was on a power play.
