Tonight the Gophers will play Notre Dame in a nonconference game. Here are some excerpts from an article in the Minnesota Daily written by Dan Lien. Notre Dame, a Division I independent team, is rumoured to be re-joining the WCHA after a nine year absence. In 1981, the school dropped out of the league when the school dumped hockey as a varsity sport. The school reinstated the hockey program, but only gives out six scholarships per season. Hockey boosters in South Bend, Ind., have been actively trying to increase interest in the Notre Dame program. Recently, over 5,000 fams turned up at a fund-raiser where football coach Lou Holtz put on skates for a trip around the Joyce Center Fieldhouse. Coach Ric Schafer led the Irish to an 18-5-15 record last season, and Minnesota leads the total series 17-12-3. The game will be carried live on KITN-TV. Hopefully, coach Schafer will give us his report after he returns from Alaska, where he and his team are headed for after tonight's game. Carol White U of M GO Gophers!!!
